PREP GIRLS BASKETBALL: Balanced scoring attack leads Sandpoint to take down of University

I grew up in the small town of Orwigsburg, Pa., where I resided all of my life before moving to Sandpoint. I attended Blue Mountain High School, where I participated in cross country and track and field, a sport that I ended up falling in love with. I went on to attend and run for DeSales University (with other brief stints at Susquehanna University and Elizabethtown College) and graduated with a bachelor’s degree in sport communication with a minor in sport management. I remember just how great it made me feel when I was mentioned in my hometown newspaper. I want to be able to give that feeling to every athlete in Bonner County, no matter how big or small their accomplishments are. As an athlete myself, I know how many hours of work are put in on a daily basis, and that hard work deserves to be recognized. It is my goal to cover as much of the Bulldogs, Spartans and Wampus Cats as I can. I want to work with every athlete, parent, coach, administrator and the community to ensure the best stories are published. | December 21, 2024 10:15 PM

SANDPOINT — The Lady Bulldogs hit 24 of their 33 free throws and rallied late to take down University High of Spokane by a 10-point margin on Saturday night at Les Rogers Court.

"It was huge," Sandpoint High head coach Will Love said about his team's 73 percent shooting from the charity stripe. "You take 10 or 12 of those away and all of a sudden it's a tie game. Free throw shooting has been something we've been struggling with throughout the season... we were able to convert from the line in some critical situations."

Sophomore Jordyn Tomco scored a game-high 22 points and hit two 3-pointers and seven of the Lady Bulldogs' free throws. Fellow sophomore Brecken Mire had 13 points and four assists for Sandpoint, which trailed 35-34 with 2:26 remaining in the third quarter before making a run.

"Really proud of the girls for the way they competed and for the composure that they had throughout the game," coach Love said. "We played U High twice in the summer and they got us both times. Our girls know theirs through club basketball so it was a big game for us in a couple of different ways."

Sophomore Livia Driggs recorded 11 points, senior Chloe Laybroune eight points and eight rebounds for Sandpoint (5-2), which will face off against a strong Kennewick team in the opening round of the West Valley Holiday Classic on Dec. 27.
