Flathead Electric Co-op hopes to encourage new linemen with two $5,000 scholarships

Interested in becoming a lineworker, and learning how to construct, maintain, and repair electrical power line systems? Flathead Electric Cooperative’s Board of Trustees recently established two $5,000 scholarships to support local students interested in attending the Pre-Apprentice Line Program at Highlands College at Montana Technical University – better known as Montana Tech in Butte. These scholarships are funded by the member-owned, not-for-profit cooperative’s unclaimed capital credits.
The one-semester Pre-Apprentice Line certificate program prepares students for groundman and apprentice positions within the line trade. Students learn how to assist with the installation, construction, maintenance, and repair of electrical power line systems. In addition, they earn their CDL Class A license. Students complete 30 credits in one semester. For the 2024/25 academic year, the total cost for Montana residents is $10,336, meaning that the scholarship will cover about half of the total program cost.
Line workers are in high demand in the United States. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the industry will experience 8% growth from 2023-2033, which is faster growth than average for career fields in the U.S.
Scholarship applicants must meet these requirements:
Applicant must be enrolled in the Pre-Apprentice Line Program at Highlands College.
Applicant’s hometown must be in the service territory of the Flathead Electric Co-op, which includes the areas of Kalispell, Whitefish, Bigfork, Libby, Lakeside, Somers, Rollins, Columbia Falls, Essex and West Glacier.
