PREP BASKETBALL: Stout defense lifts Sandpoint girls to victory against Royal

I grew up in the small town of Orwigsburg, Pa., where I resided all of my life before moving to Sandpoint. I attended Blue Mountain High School, where I participated in cross country and track and field, a sport that I ended up falling in love with. I went on to attend and run for DeSales University (with other brief stints at Susquehanna University and Elizabethtown College) and graduated with a bachelor’s degree in sport communication with a minor in sport management. I remember just how great it made me feel when I was mentioned in my hometown newspaper. I want to be able to give that feeling to every athlete in Bonner County, no matter how big or small their accomplishments are. As an athlete myself, I know how many hours of work are put in on a daily basis, and that hard work deserves to be recognized. It is my goal to cover as much of the Bulldogs, Spartans and Wampus Cats as I can. I want to work with every athlete, parent, coach, administrator and the community to ensure the best stories are published. | December 28, 2024 6:10 PM

SPOKANE VALLEY — The Lady Bulldogs had a combined five blocks, 10 steals, and used a 28-16 scoring differential in the second half to capture a win over the Lady Knights in their final game of the West Valley Holiday Classic on Saturday.

"It was a dogfight," Sandpoint High head coach Will Love said. "I'm really pleased with what we were able to do on the defensive end. We were looking to keep things (Royal's scoring) under 10 points per quarter and accomplished that. Credit to Royal, they also played some really tough defense and kept us out of a good rhythm."

Sophomore Brecken Mire led the way once again for the Lady Bulldogs, contributing a game-high 15 points, five assists, three steals and two blocks. Junior Jetta Thaete added a season-high seven points, sophomores Livia Driggs and Carly Laybourne six points each, and junior Mia Driggs hauled in a team-high six rebounds.

Senior Audrey Bergeson had nine points for Royal, which is located just outside of Moses Lake, Wash.

Senior Chloe Laybourne rounded things out with five points and five rebounds for Sandpoint (6-3), which travels to the East Idaho Holiday Shootout on Thursday where they'll face defending 4A (now 5A) state champions Shelley at Shelley High.
