COEUR d'ALENE — It's official. Trader Joe's is coming to Coeur d'Alene.

The national grocer known for its unique products at reasonable prices and liberal return policies confirmed its planned arrival Monday.

"We are happy to share that we plan to open a store in Coeur d'Alene," wrote Nakia Rohde, public relations manager, in an email to The Press.

According to a building permit, the store will be at 303. E. Spokane and the project is valued at $2.7 million.

That site is currently home to Runge's Furniture. But after 77 years in the area, the business is downsizing and changing operations. The building is projected to undergo renovations, with Trader Joe's reportedly taking over most of it, while Runge's will maintain a smaller presence.

Linda Coppess, president and CEO of the Coeur d'Alene Regional Chamber, said the arrival of Trader Joe's "marks a significant milestone for our community.

"Trader Joe's brings not only exceptional products at the best everyday prices, but also a commitment to fostering vibrant local economies by providing solid jobs and tax revenue," she wrote in an email. "Their neighborhood environment, fun and inviting brand will not only enhance our shopping experience, providing an additional choice for residents but it will also attract visitors, further solidifying Coeur d'Alene as a destination for both business and pleasure. As we continue to focus on responsible growth, Trader Joe's aligns nicely with our vision of promoting business vitality while preserving the unique charm of our beautiful city."

Trader Joe's has two stores in Spokane and two in Idaho, in Boise and Meridian. This will be its first in North Idaho. There are more than 500 Trader Joe's in the U.S., with nearly 200 of them in California.

According to Business Insider, Trader Joe's employs about 17,000 people and makes an estimated $16.5 billion in sales per year.

Trader Joe's has long been on the wish list for many who wanted to see a Coeur d'Alene store. Word of its plans to come here spread quickly on social media.

Most said they believe it will complement Pilgrim's Market, which just celebrated its 24th anniversary and is just east across the street from Runge's.

"They each will have their own unique products. Now that Trader Joe's is going into CDA, Pilgrims may even get more customers that will be coming to the area, instead of going to Spokane," wrote Julie Dee in a Facebook post.

"I don't see the problem patronizing both establishments. I honestly see them both getting more customers due to being nearby each other. I'd hit up both in one trip if it was convenient like that," wrote Elizabeth Fox.

"I’m a almost 30-year supporter of Pilgrims Market. Most of the items I would buy at Trader Joe’s are not the same items I buy at Pilgrims," wrote Teri Dupey.

Pilgrim's owner Joe Hamilton could not be reached for comment on Monday.

A mother's words, and love, echo in time

If I am quiet for a moment, I can hear her voice and I have to chuckle because her words were not always calm, sweet and reassuring. Oh, not that she was mean. She was just speaking her mind and yes, wanted to have a little fun at the expense of those she loved.
