PREP BASKETBALL: Clark Fork boys take down Kellogg JV

I grew up in the small town of Orwigsburg, Pa., where I resided all of my life before moving to Sandpoint. I attended Blue Mountain High School, where I participated in cross country and track and field, a sport that I ended up falling in love with. I went on to attend and run for DeSales University (with other brief stints at Susquehanna University and Elizabethtown College) and graduated with a bachelor’s degree in sport communication with a minor in sport management. I remember just how great it made me feel when I was mentioned in my hometown newspaper. I want to be able to give that feeling to every athlete in Bonner County, no matter how big or small their accomplishments are. As an athlete myself, I know how many hours of work are put in on a daily basis, and that hard work deserves to be recognized. It is my goal to cover as much of the Bulldogs, Spartans and Wampus Cats as I can. I want to work with every athlete, parent, coach, administrator and the community to ensure the best stories are published. | February 15, 2024 9:20 PM

KELLOGG — Owen Howard and Mateo Cruz each posted double-doubles as the Wampus Cats cruised past Kellogg’s JV squad at Andrews Gymnasium on Thursday night.

After a close first quarter, Clark Fork outscored Kellogg 15-3 in the second quarter to take control. Eventually, the Wampus Cats ended up taking home a 32-point road victory after a strong second half to wrap up the regular season.

“We started off rough but picked it up in the second half,” head coach Heath Beason said. “Mateo and Owen controlled the boards. Westin and Chase stole the show tonight in regards to steals. Defensively, our rotation was a little slow because our legs were still heavy. We still have a lot of stuff to work on for our next game, but that being said, the guys really turned it around tonight in the second half and looked strong … We got ourselves into foul trouble and our bench really stepped up and kept us in the game.”

Owen Howard led the way with 12 points and 10 rebounds. Cruz scored 11 and hauled in 12 rebounds. Chase Sanroman led the Wampus Cats in steals with six; Westin Caven had five.

Clark Fork (11-6, 4-0) will face the winner of the 1A D2 District 1-2 play-in game between Kootenai/Mullan on Thursday, Feb. 22 at North Idaho College.
