Sandpoint 64, Moscow 58

MOSCOW — Logan Roos scored 18 points and hit two 3-pointers in the beginning of double overtime to help Sandpoint upset Moscow, 64-58, in Game 1 of the 4A District 1-2 best-of-three-series held at Moscow High Wednesday night.

After a low-scoring first quarter, Moscow outscored Sandpoint 16-5 in the second to take a 21-15 lead heading into halftime. In the third however, Sandpoint came out hot. Roos hit a 3-pointer, assisted by Luke Leavitt, to bring the Bulldogs back within one. On the next possession, Derrick Chamberlain grabbed an offensive rebound and converted a putback bucket to give Sandpoint a 31-30 lead to end the quarter.

Heading into the fourth quarter, the Bulldogs kept at it. With 2:58 remaining in the game, Roos dished a behind-the-back pass to Emerik Jones, who sunk a deep 3-pointer at the top of the key to put the Bulldogs ahead 41-36. Moscow would respond with a 7-0 run, and eventually led 47-44 with just 17 seconds left. It was Sandpoint senior Parker Childs, who scored a team-high 21 points, that hit a step-back 3-pointer on the left wing with four seconds to go to tie the game at 47 … overtime.

“You hope that a kid like that, a senior and three-year starter, has the courage to take a shot like that and make it,” head coach Brian Childs said. “It was a big shot and I was definitely happy for him at that moment.”

In the overtime, both teams traded a couple of baskets, but when time expired, a winner was still not decided with both teams tied at 52. In double overtime, Sandpoint took control. Roos hit two quick 3-pointers to put the Bulldogs ahead, 58-52. Down the stretch, Wil Leisy and Childs both hit three free throws each to help Sandpoint come away with the victory.

“We were just resilient,” coach Childs said. “Coming off a real emotional game on Monday, I was wondering what we had in the tank. I thought we got off to a good start, then struggled a bit in the second quarter, but we stayed relaxed and played our game. We adjusted to their physicality and for our younger players to adjust to that, it showed a lot of resiliency — it showed how we can come from behind again and win.”

Coach Childs said Parker Childs played a crucial role in leading and energizing the team in both overtimes. As for Roos, coach Childs said those big-time shots he nailed in double overtime is just one of many things he is capable of.

“He’s a young kid, figuring it out, and we need him to be that third guy that we can go to,” coach Childs said of Roos. “When he and Parker are making shots, it opens things up for Derrick and Emerik inside. Those 3-pointers that he made in the second overtime were huge, and that behind-the-back pass he made to Emerik was just simply Logan making a play.”

In addition to his 21 points, Childs also dished out a team-high four assists. Jones added 12 points and seven rebounds. Chamberlain finished with 10 points, seven rebounds, four steals and three blocks.

Moscow’s Cody Wilson led the Bears with 28 points.

Sandpoint (11-12) will travel to Moscow again Friday in hopes of securing a trip to the 4A state tournament.
