EPHRATA — The Ephrata School District has announced a new program to help students at Ephrata High and Middle schools with behavioral health management. 

“The program provides a wide variety of behavioral health education, prevention, intervention and recovery support services to students experiencing mental health needs, have been impacted by substance use or are at risk of using substances,” an announcement from the district said. 

The goals of the program are to ensure students are successful, have good attendance and move toward graduation regardless of challenges that come up. It is also hoped that students’ mental health and wellness, including prevention of substance abuse by students, is maintained properly. Officials hope that the program will also provide a positive climate through campus activities and informational campaigns. 

Maddie Sanchez will serve as the student assistance professional for both schools and is employed through the North Central Educational Services District and will be available each weekday from 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. She may also adjust her schedule to meet with students, families or community groups as needed to ensure the program is meeting community needs. 

Sanchez meets with students individually or in small groups to provide necessary support such as education and guidance for students challenged by substance use or mental health concerns. Mentorship from Sanchez will include teaching coping mechanisms, wellness skills and providing referrals to other community resources they may need.
