SANDPOINT — Lakeland led by seven points with a little over two minutes remaining before Sandpoint closed on a 10-0 run for a 53-50 Inland Empire League win at Les Rogers Court on Friday.
Sandpoint junior Aubrey Knowles converted an and-one layup to cut the deficit to 50-48. Lily Richardson and Brecken Mire closed out the game at the free-throw line for Sandpoint.
“These are the fun parts of the game,” Sandpoint coach Will Love said. “Credit to both teams for playing hard. Lakeland is well-coached and they came prepared tonight, and really executed against us early in that fourth quarter. Credit to our girls for believing that we could win this game, and then making it happen.”
Junior Landree Simon had 21 points, eight rebounds and four steals for Lakeland (5-7, 1-4), which hosts Moscow next Friday. Senior Payton Sterling added 12 points.
Sandpoint senior Karlie Banks scored eight of her team-high 17 points in the third quarter. Freshman Brecken Mire scored 15 points, seven in the second quarter for the Bulldogs (13-3, 4-1), who host Bonners Ferry on Wednesday.
