PREP WRESTLING: A solid weekend for Coeur d'Alene's Anderson
Coeur d'Alene Press | UPDATED 2 years, 8 months AGO
NAMPA — If Coeur d’Alene sophomore Brooklyn Anderson was still seeking a little confidence, she may have found it at the Ford Idaho Center on Saturday afternoon.
Anderson pinned Jordyn Kearn of American Falls in 2:59 to win the 152-pound girls title at the Rollie Lane Invitational.
“She just had a really solid tournament,” Coeur d’Alene coach Jeff Moffat said. “She was never really in jeopardy in any of her matches. She was fifth here last year, so hopefully this gives her a boost. She just doesn’t make any mistakes and she’s hard to score on. In the finals, she really stuck to her game plan and did a great job. I’m really happy for her.”
Post Falls junior Seth Martin was second at 170, losing in the finals to Jonathan Seamons of Nampa, a state 5A runner-up at 160 last year.
“It was a very close match, just a really, really hard-fought match,” Post Falls coach Pete Reardon said. “We had some tough calls, but I was really impressed with how Seth competed. I was really proud of the way he fought.”
Damion Hamilton was third at 152, Tyson Barnhart was sixth at 145, Trey Smith sixth at 160 for Post Falls, which finished fifth with 147 points.
“Those guys just really epitomize what we’re trying to do,” Reardon said. “Damion beat a lot of really tough kids and they had to fight in each match. They might not have finished where they wanted, but they’re getting good results.”
Minico of Rupert won the tournament with 190 points. Fruitland (189.5) was second, Nampa (166.5) third and Wasatch (Utah) (153) fourth.
Coeur d’Alene finished 24th in the 88-team tournament with 85 points.
“It was a rough day on the boys side, and we lost a few in the blood round,” Moffat said. “It’s a tough tournament, but we wrestled and competed hard. We just came in on the short end of the stick. We love where we’re at, but need to get back to the drawing board and keep working toward February.”
Priest River’s Caeden McLaimtaig finished sixth at 152. Spartan Colm McLaimtaig, who picked up his 100th career win on Friday, did not place for the Spartans at 138 pounds.
Booth, Leonard win
at U-High tourney
SPOKANE VALLEY — Nathan Booth (157 pounds) and Garrett Leonard (195) claimed individual titles for Lake City in the Pacific Northwest Classic at University High.
Booth, a junior, beat Pullman’s Aydin Peltier 5-2 in the championship match.
“The first day and a half, he was getting some wins, but wrestled really conservative,” Lake City coach Corey Owen said. “In the finals, he had a good kid from Pullman that was fourth at state last year, and he just wrestled so well in that match. It was probably the best I’ve seen him wrestle all year and it was impressive to see.”
Leonard, also a junior, pinned University’s Ryan Sulpizo in 3:10 in the finals.
“Garrett’s at the point now where it’s going to take a really good kid to beat him,” Owen said. “He’s wrestling so well right now.”
Alden Curto finished sixth at 138 for Lake City, which finished 11th with 100 points.
“Alden’s a special kid that has a really good feel for what he’s doing,” Owen said. “It’s only his second year of wrestling, but he just works hard and does a lot of good things. He’s really fun to coach.”
Mead won the team title with 303 points.

WARDEN, Wash. — Freshman Kelby Harvey (113 pounds) and sophomore Zach David (138) claimed individual titles for St. Maries, which finished runner-up with 232.5 points in the Jeremiah Schmunk Invitational at Warden High.
Other St. Maries placers were senior Brock Anderson (second at 144), senior Trey Gibson (second at 190), sophomore Amando Stewart (third at 150), junior Landon Tweedy (third at 132), senior Jackson Nantell (third at 215), senior Kieson Watts (fourth at 165), sophomore Beau Wetzel (fourth at 120), sophomore Dylan Hansen (fifth at 144) and sophomore Rustle Brusseau (fifth at 175).
“We were missing four of our starters due to illness, but our young kids really stepped up and wrestled hard,” St. Maries coach Dennis Humphrey said. “We had some great competition and they stepped up to the challenge.”
Tonasket won the team title with 237.5 points.
