QUINCY — One unidentified man is deceased after two Quincy Police Department officers responded to a call for assistance at the Jackpot Food Mart at 308 F St. Southeast in Quincy a little after 8:30 p.m. Monday.

“They were responding to a report of a man with a knife. When the two Quincy police officers got there, and when they contacted the male, one of the two officers was stabbed in the arm and shoulder and the officers drew their weapons and fired on that suspect and the suspect was declared dead at the scene,” said Grant County Sheriff’s Office Public Information Officer Kyle Foreman.

The officer's injuries were not life-threatening and he was treated at the Quincy Valley Medical Center and released. Both officers are on administrative leave which is standard procedure after an officer-involved shooting, Foreman said. GCSO is the lead investigating agency into the incident as part of its participation in the Central Basin Investigative Team, a joint regional group that is established to investigate such incidents.

Foreman said the investigation, as required under the Law Enforcement Training and Community Safety Act, a state law, will include two civilians who will be kept informed regarding the case and attend briefings with CBIT investigators and QPD officials.

The identity of the man who was killed in the incident has not been publicly released, Foreman said.

To preserve the integrity of the investigation, some information related to the incident may not be released, or will only be released after it has been shared with the family of the man who died, Foreman said. However, investigators with CBIT, local and state agencies are working to ensure the investigation is both thorough and completed in a timely manner.

“The Washington State Patrol Crime Lab was on the scene gathering evidence today,” Foreman said Tuesday.

COLUMN: It’s amazing what you can learn ...

Four years ago, almost to the day, my wife and I closed on the first home either of us have owned, a stunningly Pepto-pink house in Ephrata with what we thought of at the time as “character.” It turns out, that character is really, in many ways, a lot of work. Work I hadn’t done much of since helping my dad out when I was a kid a few decades ago. Still though, all of the work I had to relearn or learn – thank goodness for the folks at Ace, Lowe’s and experts on YouTube – has been incredibly rewarding.
