Sandpoint 69, Priest River 60

PRIEST RIVER – Sandpoint used a big third quarter to slip past the Spartans at Priest River Lamanna High on Friday.

After a tight first quarter, Priest River started off the second on a 7-0 run to take a 17-14 lead. Sandpoint responded with an 8-0 run of their own and eventually took a three-point lead into halftime, 31-28.

It was in the third where Emerik Jones and Knox Williams scored 17 of the Bulldogs’ 21 points to give the Bulldogs a 10-point lead heading into the final quarter of play. Sandpoint, who led by as much as 12, held off the Spartans to capture a 9-point victory.

“We were on our heels in the first half,” Sandpoint head coach Brian Childs said. “I think you have to give credit to Priest River for how well they played  – they had 11 three’s. Every time we did something well, it seemed like they always shifted the momentum back to their side. We also have to give credit to our guys for figuring out a way to win tonight.”

Jones had a game-high 19 points, 15 of which came in the second half, and seven rebounds for the Bulldogs. Williams added 14 and a team-high four steals. Parker Childs added five assists.

“Emerik stepped up when we needed to score in the second half,” Childs said. “I’m happy for Knox to be a freshman in that environment and play that well. However, our wildcard tonight was Logan Roos who gave us nine points. He has been battling a hand injury and being sick, and tonight he stepped back into the role we’re hoping he will play. I’m happy he’s back on track.”

For the Spartans, Lucas Mathews led the way with 17 points, 12 of which came from behind the three-point line, and five assists. Brock Kreager added 14 points and five assists. Brady Hatten scored six points and hauled in five rebounds (three offensive) for Priest River.

Sandpoint (7-7, 1-0) will travel to Moscow Tuesday. Priest River (2-7, 1-3) hosts Timberlake Tuesday.

Clark Fork JV 56 , Bonners Ferry C 54

BONNERS FERRY – Down by 10 at halftime, the Wampus Cats clawed their way to a 2-point victory over Bonners Ferry’s C team at Bonners Ferry High on Friday.

Mateo Cruz and Westin Caven both had 21 points each for Clark Fork. Cruz scored a go-ahead 3-point basket with 20 seconds remaining to give the Wampus Cats the 56-54 victory; 14 of his 21 points came in the second half.

All of the Clark Fork varsity basketball games were canceled this week. Both the varsity boys and girls will head to Mullan on Tuesday.
