BATTLE FOR THE PADDLE: Banks’ hot streak continues in Sandpoint girls’ win over Lakeland
MAX OSWALD | Hagadone News Network | UPDATED 1 year, 11 months AGO
I grew up in the small town of Orwigsburg, Pa., where I resided all of my life before moving to Sandpoint. I attended Blue Mountain High School, where I participated in cross country and track and field, a sport that I ended up falling in love with. I went on to attend and run for DeSales University (with other brief stints at Susquehanna University and Elizabethtown College) and graduated with a bachelor’s degree in sport communication with a minor in sport management. I remember just how great it made me feel when I was mentioned in my hometown newspaper. I want to be able to give that feeling to every athlete in Bonner County, no matter how big or small their accomplishments are. As an athlete myself, I know how many hours of work are put in on a daily basis, and that hard work deserves to be recognized. It is my goal to cover as much of the Bulldogs, Spartans and Wampus Cats as I can. I want to work with every athlete, parent, coach, administrator and the community to ensure the best stories are published. | January 19, 2024 10:20 PM
GIRLS BASKETBALL
Sandpoint 49, Lakeland 41
RATHDRUM — What can’t Karlie Banks do? The Sandpoint senior led the Bulldogs with 33 points, nine rebounds, four steals, and three blocks in a 49-41 Inland Empire League win over Lakeland at Hawk Court on Friday night.
Leading by four after the first quarter, Lakeland managed to extend their lead to seven by the end of the second quarter, 23-16, to mark the end of a low scoring first half. However, like usual, head coach Will Love was able to energize his Bulldogs during the break. Sandpoint opened the third quarter on a 10-0 run, and controlled the game from there on out, outscoring the Hawks by 15 in the second half.
“We had way too many turnovers in the first half and we also missed some easy shots,” head coach Will Love said. “Probably in a regular game and not in a spirit game, we make those. We made a few adjustments offensively and I told them at the break ‘the shots are going to fall’ and they started to. It was nice to get off to that run to start the second half.”
Overall, Banks drained five three’s on the night; 21 of her 33 points came in the second half. Brecken Mire added six points, five rebounds, and a team-high four steals. Jordyn Tomco scored six and dished out a team-high three assists. As a team, Sandpoint accumulated 18 steals.
“Credit to all of our girls for how well they played, especially on the defensive end,” Love said. “To hold a team like Lakeland to 41 points is quite the accomplishment considering they score roughly 52 points per game … tonight we did a good job executing the things we talked about the night before — it translated into a lot of steals and we forced Lakeland to take some tough shots. I’m pleased with how the girls came out and took care of business in that second half.”
Lakeland’s Landree Simon led the Hawks with 12 points and five steals. Karstyn Kiefer recorded a game-high eight assists. Lila Kiefer hauled in nine rebounds and added four steals and two blocks to the stat sheet.
Sandpoint (16-3, 6-1) will face Timberlake at home Monday, Jan. 29.
