PREP WRESTLING: Sandpoint boys win Ted Kato Invitational; Priest River finishes 2nd

I grew up in the small town of Orwigsburg, Pa., where I resided all of my life before moving to Sandpoint. I attended Blue Mountain High School, where I participated in cross country and track and field, a sport that I ended up falling in love with. I went on to attend and run for DeSales University (with other brief stints at Susquehanna University and Elizabethtown College) and graduated with a bachelor’s degree in sport communication with a minor in sport management. I remember just how great it made me feel when I was mentioned in my hometown newspaper. I want to be able to give that feeling to every athlete in Bonner County, no matter how big or small their accomplishments are. As an athlete myself, I know how many hours of work are put in on a daily basis, and that hard work deserves to be recognized. It is my goal to cover as much of the Bulldogs, Spartans and Wampus Cats as I can. I want to work with every athlete, parent, coach, administrator and the community to ensure the best stories are published. | January 20, 2024 7:00 PM

THOMPSON FALLS – After a quick turnaround from Battle for the Paddle, Sandpoint’s Shane Sherrill (138), Ashlei Hawkins (145), and Jorden Tyler (205) all won their respective weight classes to lead the Bulldogs to victory at the Ted Kato Invitational held at Thompson Falls High Saturday.

Sherrill went 4-0 on the weekend, defeating all his opponents via pin; Tyler pinned all three of his opponents as well en route to gold. Hawkins won by pin in the quarterfinals, by major decision in the semifinals, and by a narrow 3-2 decision in the championship match.

Orion Grimes (120) took home an individual championship for Priest River, who finished second out of the 16 teams who competed Saturday. Grimes won his first two matches via pin and then by an 11-2 major decision in the championship match.

Sandpoint’s Jeremiah Palmer (205) and Priest River’s Caeden (152) and Colm McLaimtaig (138) picked up second place finishes.

Carter Happell (103), Aidan Rork (113), Caiden Addington (132), Colter Cates (145), and Jackson Holman (182) all picked up crucial third place finishes for Sandpoint. For Priest River, Caleb Grow (285) notched a third place finish over Sandpoint’s Gavin Walters, who took fourth.

Sandpoint girls wrestling was also in action on Saturday, taking part in the first annual Ted Kato Girls Mixer held in Plains, Mont. The mixer was what would now be considered a 'throwback' style wrestling event... just one gym, one mat, and a paper bout sheet. Although official results were not available, head coach Valerie Johansen said the girls did great on short rest.

"This was a good experience," Johansen said. "We got to see a variety of wrestlers. Anytime we can help support the growth of girls wrestling, it's a win-win."

Sandpoint will be back in action Wednesday at home for the Battle for the ‘B’ Cup. Priest River is set to dual St. Maries at home on Wednesday.
