PREP WRESTLING: Newsom wins individual title, Sandpoint girls third at North Idaho Rumble

I grew up in the small town of Orwigsburg, Pa., where I resided all of my life before moving to Sandpoint. I attended Blue Mountain High School, where I participated in cross country and track and field, a sport that I ended up falling in love with. I went on to attend and run for DeSales University (with other brief stints at Susquehanna University and Elizabethtown College) and graduated with a bachelor’s degree in sport communication with a minor in sport management. I remember just how great it made me feel when I was mentioned in my hometown newspaper. I want to be able to give that feeling to every athlete in Bonner County, no matter how big or small their accomplishments are. As an athlete myself, I know how many hours of work are put in on a daily basis, and that hard work deserves to be recognized. It is my goal to cover as much of the Bulldogs, Spartans and Wampus Cats as I can. I want to work with every athlete, parent, coach, administrator and the community to ensure the best stories are published. | January 27, 2024 6:15 PM

COEUR d’ALENE – Teagan Newsom (138) did not just win an individual title at the North Idaho Rumble held at Coeur d’Alene High on Saturday; she also was named the tournament’s most outstanding wrestler after upsetting her opponent in the championship match, which helped the Bulldogs to a third place finish.

Newsom, en route to gold, pinned Rylann Lewis of Bonners Ferry in the semifinal (2:46) and then defeated Hayden Palmer of Moscow via an 8-6 decision in the championship match.

“Teagan came back with purpose today and fought for every point,” head coach Valerie Johansen said. “We are incredibly proud of this freshman.”

Following Newsom was Emma Garman (120) who finished second after notching three wins on the weekend. Mackenzee Donenfeld (100), Hunter Edmondson (107), and Lilli Marti (235) all finished third. Sylvia Becker (165) finished fourth after picking up three wins in a tough bracket.

“After being down half a team today, our girls stepped up big time,” Johansen said.

Next up for Sandpoint is the Conrad Garner Duals held Feb. 2-3 at Bonners Ferry High.
