PREP BASKETBALL: Trio leads Sandpoint girls past Timberlake

I grew up in the small town of Orwigsburg, Pa., where I resided all of my life before moving to Sandpoint. I attended Blue Mountain High School, where I participated in cross country and track and field, a sport that I ended up falling in love with. I went on to attend and run for DeSales University (with other brief stints at Susquehanna University and Elizabethtown College) and graduated with a bachelor’s degree in sport communication with a minor in sport management. I remember just how great it made me feel when I was mentioned in my hometown newspaper. I want to be able to give that feeling to every athlete in Bonner County, no matter how big or small their accomplishments are. As an athlete myself, I know how many hours of work are put in on a daily basis, and that hard work deserves to be recognized. It is my goal to cover as much of the Bulldogs, Spartans and Wampus Cats as I can. I want to work with every athlete, parent, coach, administrator and the community to ensure the best stories are published. | January 29, 2024 9:20 PM

Sandpoint 47, Timberlake 35

SANDPOINT — A Bulldog trio consisting of Brecken Mire, Karlie Banks and Jordyn Tomco combined for 45 of Sandpoint’s 47 points in a win over Timberlake at Les Rogers Court on Monday night.

It was a scrappy one at Sandpoint High with both defenses playing tough. The first basket of the game did not come until 2:40 remaining in the first quarter when Mire got a floater to fall. Heading into the half, Tomco hit a buzzer-beater from mid-range to give the Bulldogs a 19-17 lead — a much needed momentum boost. After three quarters of play, the Tigers remained within five, but Sandpoint pulled away in the fourth, outscoring Timberlake 17-10 in the quarter.

“It was a great defensive effort tonight," head coach Will Love said. "I was telling the girls after the game that if you can hold a Timberlake team to 35, it's a really big accomplishment. We have changed our defense around a little bit, going to a two-three zone, which we have only been doing since the Lake City game. We know the girls are going to keep improving with it each chance that they get to play. They teamed up to do an awesome job tonight."

Banks and Mire each had 17 points on the night; Banks added four blocks and Mire two steals. Tomco had 11 points of her own. Livia Driggs scored the remaining two points while Demi Driggs hauled in a team-high six rebounds for Sandpoint.

Sandpoint (17-3, 6-1) will wrap up the regular season at Moscow tonight.
