ALL-STARS: SLL 12U softball finishes second at districts
MAX OSWALD | Hagadone News Network | UPDATED 1 year, 5 months AGO
I grew up in the small town of Orwigsburg, Pa., where I resided all of my life before moving to Sandpoint. I attended Blue Mountain High School, where I participated in cross country and track and field, a sport that I ended up falling in love with. I went on to attend and run for DeSales University (with other brief stints at Susquehanna University and Elizabethtown College) and graduated with a bachelor’s degree in sport communication with a minor in sport management. I remember just how great it made me feel when I was mentioned in my hometown newspaper. I want to be able to give that feeling to every athlete in Bonner County, no matter how big or small their accomplishments are. As an athlete myself, I know how many hours of work are put in on a daily basis, and that hard work deserves to be recognized. It is my goal to cover as much of the Bulldogs, Spartans and Wampus Cats as I can. I want to work with every athlete, parent, coach, administrator and the community to ensure the best stories are published. | July 2, 2024 1:00 AM
SANDPOINT — Sandpoint battled hard to get a 15-0 win over Post Falls in their first matchup but fell to Lewiston 10-5 in pool play and 7-2 in the championship game to finish second at the Idaho District 1 Little League tournament held June 29-30 at Stub Myers Park in Rathdrum.
Against Post Falls, Sandpoint started off the game by scoring 10 runs in the first inning and five in the second to put the game out of reach. Chryslynn Byers, Ayla Deany and Bella Danish all had RBI singles during the rally while Delaney Montgomery notched a triple. On the mound, Danish got the win and pitched a three-inning perfect game … striking out every single batter she faced.
In Sandpoint’s first meeting against Lewiston, the game was closer than it appeared. Tied 1-1 going into the third inning, Lewiston put up four runs, but Sandpoint responded in the bottom half of the inning with a 4-run rally capped off by an RBI single from Nina Cardin. Leading 6-5 heading into the final inning, Lewiston scored four runs and held off Sandpoint to take home the victory. Despite the loss, Sandpoint’s Spencer Wilson was terrific on the mound, recording 13 strikeouts.
In the championship game, Sandpoint and Lewiston faced off again. Kinlee Ecklund started the game off with a double to left field, but Sandpoint’s first run didn't come until the top of the second when Deany scored on a wild pitch. In the fourth, Danish hit an RBI double to center field to score the team’s second run and tie the game 2-2. However, Lewiston rallied for five runs between the fourth and fifth innings and eventually punched their ticket to the state tournament set to be held July 12-14 at the Charles F. McDevitt Youth Sports Complex in Boise.
