LEGION BASEBALL: 19U Lakers defeat Wenatchee Valley, fall to Lums
MAX OSWALD | Hagadone News Network | UPDATED 1 year, 5 months AGO
I grew up in the small town of Orwigsburg, Pa., where I resided all of my life before moving to Sandpoint. I attended Blue Mountain High School, where I participated in cross country and track and field, a sport that I ended up falling in love with. I went on to attend and run for DeSales University (with other brief stints at Susquehanna University and Elizabethtown College) and graduated with a bachelor’s degree in sport communication with a minor in sport management. I remember just how great it made me feel when I was mentioned in my hometown newspaper. I want to be able to give that feeling to every athlete in Bonner County, no matter how big or small their accomplishments are. As an athlete myself, I know how many hours of work are put in on a daily basis, and that hard work deserves to be recognized. It is my goal to cover as much of the Bulldogs, Spartans and Wampus Cats as I can. I want to work with every athlete, parent, coach, administrator and the community to ensure the best stories are published. | July 5, 2024 9:45 PM
COEUR d’ALENE — The 19U North Idaho Lakers squeaked by the Wenatchee Valley Baseball Club, 7-6, and fell to the Coeur d’Alene Lumbermen 19U (AA), 11-7, to wrap up pod play at Spokane-Coeur d’Alene Wood Bat Classic held Friday at Thorco Field.
Against Wenatchee, the Lakers headed into the bottom of the second inning down 4-0. After drawing a couple of walks with the bases loaded, Jacob Hansen knocked in a run after a hard hit ball to shortstop and Jorden Tyler hit an RBI single up the middle to tie the game 4-4. In the fourth, North Idaho took their first lead of the contest thanks to a three-run rally capped off by a two-run single to left by Soren Caprio. Heading into the final inning, Parker Reichart, who pitched 2 1/3 no-hit innings to go along with two strikeouts out of the bullpen, allowed two unearned runs as the Lakers committed two costly errors. With a slim 7-6 lead, Sage Medeiros came into the game and got the final two outs to pick up the save; he was also the only Laker with multiple hits, going 2-for-3 with two singles.
Dallen Williams was credited with the win on the mound, giving up four hits, four runs (no earned) and three walks while striking out two batters across four innings. All six of the runs North Idaho gave up were unearned.
In the nightcap, the Lakers started off the game with two quick runs, getting an RBI single from Williams and a sacrifice bunt which scored a run from Finn Mellander. After giving up three runs in the bottom of the second, North Idaho took a 4-3 lead in the top of third, scoring on a couple of walks with the bases loaded. However, the lead didn’t last long as the Lumbermen exploded for eight runs in the bottom half of the inning. North Idaho rallied for three runs in the fourth, getting RBI singles from Mellander and Williams, before the game was eventually called due to darkness/time restrictions.
Both pitching staffs struggled, combining for 19 walks — nine from North Idaho, 10 from Coeur d’Alene. Medeiros was tagged with the loss on the mound after coming in to relieve Caprio, who started the game, in the second inning.
North Idaho (11-10) will be back in action Saturday at 10 a.m. for a consolation game against the Missoula Impact, their final game of the Spokane-Coeur d’Alene Wood Bat Classic.
