LEGION BASEBALL: 19U Lakers walk-off Orofino, sweep series
MAX OSWALD | Hagadone News Network | UPDATED 1 year, 5 months AGO
I grew up in the small town of Orwigsburg, Pa., where I resided all of my life before moving to Sandpoint. I attended Blue Mountain High School, where I participated in cross country and track and field, a sport that I ended up falling in love with. I went on to attend and run for DeSales University (with other brief stints at Susquehanna University and Elizabethtown College) and graduated with a bachelor’s degree in sport communication with a minor in sport management. I remember just how great it made me feel when I was mentioned in my hometown newspaper. I want to be able to give that feeling to every athlete in Bonner County, no matter how big or small their accomplishments are. As an athlete myself, I know how many hours of work are put in on a daily basis, and that hard work deserves to be recognized. It is my goal to cover as much of the Bulldogs, Spartans and Wampus Cats as I can. I want to work with every athlete, parent, coach, administrator and the community to ensure the best stories are published. | July 12, 2024 6:10 PM
19U Lakers
SANDPOINT — Gavin Day scored Parker Reichart on a suicide squeeze to walk-off the first game, Sage Medeiros pitched six dominant innings in the second game and the 19U North Idaho Lakers defeated the Orofino Merchants 9-8 and 8-4 at War Memorial Field on Friday.
In the first game, Medeiros had an RBI groundout in the first inning, Day an RBI single in the fifth, but the Lakers found themselves trailing 7-3 heading into the bottom of the sixth. Against all odds, North Idaho put together a massive 5-run rally. Reichart and Jorden Tyler hit singles to start things off. Later in the inning, after plating two runs, Soren Caprio, Finn Mellander, and Medeiros hit back-to-back-to-back RBI triples to give the Lakers an 8-7 lead. Tied 8-8 heading into the bottom of the seventh, Reichart, who was 3-for-4 on the day, doubled to deep right field. Tyler then sacrificed Reichart to third base via a bunt, and in an unexpected move, Day bunted for a single down the first base line during the next at-bat and Reichart scored as the Lakers walked-off the game.
In addition to scoring the winning run, Reichart got the win on the mound, throwing 1 2/3 scoreless innings in relief. Cole Sanroman also had a solid outing for the Lakers on the bump, giving up just three hits and one earned run while striking out three batters over four innings of work.
In the second game, it was all North Idaho from the very beginning. In the top of the second inning, Mellander had an RBI double and Jacob Hansen a sacrifice fly to give the Lakers a 2-0 lead. In the third, Hansen capped off a four-run rally with a two-run single as the Lakers went ahead 6-0. The Merchants would plate a run in the fourth and three in the sixth, but they wouldn’t get too close. In the top of the sixth, Chase Sanroman hit an RBI groundout, Mason Little an RBI double to give the Lakers some extra insurance runs.
Medeiros got the start on the mound for North Idaho and struck out six batters over six innings, giving up five hits, one walk and one earned run. Chase Sanroman pitched a clean final inning in relief, striking out one batter, to seal the deal. At the plate, Greysen Johnson supplied the Lakers with a much needed 3-for-3 effort (three singles) and a drew a walk; he was the only Laker to reach base in every single plate appearance.
The Lakers had 25 hits between both games.
North Idaho (14-11) will host Grangeville for a doubleheader Saturday at War Memorial Field.
