LEGION BASEBALL: 19U Lakers extend winning streak to five with sweep of Camas Prairie

I grew up in the small town of Orwigsburg, Pa., where I resided all of my life before moving to Sandpoint. I attended Blue Mountain High School, where I participated in cross country and track and field, a sport that I ended up falling in love with. I went on to attend and run for DeSales University (with other brief stints at Susquehanna University and Elizabethtown College) and graduated with a bachelor’s degree in sport communication with a minor in sport management. I remember just how great it made me feel when I was mentioned in my hometown newspaper. I want to be able to give that feeling to every athlete in Bonner County, no matter how big or small their accomplishments are. As an athlete myself, I know how many hours of work are put in on a daily basis, and that hard work deserves to be recognized. It is my goal to cover as much of the Bulldogs, Spartans and Wampus Cats as I can. I want to work with every athlete, parent, coach, administrator and the community to ensure the best stories are published. | July 13, 2024 9:15 PM
Extended recap from Sunday's paper
SANDPOINT — After trailing 7-1 at one point in the first game, the 19U North Idaho Lakers scored 31 out of the next 32 runs during Saturday’s doubleheader to take down the Grangeville-based Camas Prairie Zephyrs 15-8 and 17-0 at War Memorial Field.
In the first game, Gavin Day, who was 3-for-3 with three singles, knocked an RBI single to right in the bottom of the first inning to get the Lakers started. However, North Idaho’s bats struggled until the fourth inning. Down 7-1, Sage Medeiros hit an RBI triple, Finn Mellander an RBI double, to get the Lakers back within three runs. In the fifth, the Lakers kept things rolling. Mellander, Dallen Williams and Coleman Inge all hit RBI singles to give the Lakers a 10-7 lead. In the sixth, it was much the same for North Idaho. Jorden Tyler and Chase Sanroman hit RBI doubles, Greysen Johnson an RBI single, to give the Lakers a 15-7 advantage.
Inge got his first win of the summer season on the mound, throwing two innings in relief and giving up four hits, two walks and four earned runs while striking out one batter.
In the second game, North Idaho’s bats stayed hot. Heading into the top of the second inning leading 3-0, Jacob Hansen capped off a 5-run Lakers rally with a two-run triple to deep right field. In the fourth, Hansen and Inge had RBI singles, and Soren Caprio, who was 3-for-4 in the contest with 5 RBIs and three runs scored, hit an inside the park grand slam to put North Idaho up 14-0. The Lakers added three more runs in the top of the fifth and eventually took home a 17-0 shutout victory.
Mason Little got the win on the bump, throwing 2 1/3 no-hit innings, giving up three walks and striking out two batters. Mellander pitched 1 2/3 innings in relief and gave up one hit and one walk while recording a strikeout. Williams pitched a 1-2-3 final inning, which included one strikeout, to finish out the game.
Over the last four games, the Lakers have knocked 50 hits and are averaging 12.3 runs per game.
With the two wins Saturday, North Idaho (16-11) improved to 11-3 in league play and have officially clinched the No. 2 seed heading into the Class A Area A District Championship set to be held July 18-21 in Moscow.
