TRAVEL SOFTBALL: The North 16U takes second at Summer River Bash

MAX OSWALD | Hagadone News Network | UPDATED 7 months, 3 weeks AGO
by MAX OSWALD
I grew up in the small town of Orwigsburg, Pa., where I resided all of my life before moving to Sandpoint. I attended Blue Mountain High School, where I participated in cross country and track and field, a sport that I ended up falling in love with. I went on to attend and run for DeSales University (with other brief stints at Susquehanna University and Elizabethtown College) and graduated with a bachelor’s degree in sport communication with a minor in sport management. I remember just how great it made me feel when I was mentioned in my hometown newspaper. I want to be able to give that feeling to every athlete in Bonner County, no matter how big or small their accomplishments are. As an athlete myself, I know how many hours of work are put in on a daily basis, and that hard work deserves to be recognized. It is my goal to cover as much of the Bulldogs, Spartans and Wampus Cats as I can. I want to work with every athlete, parent, coach, administrator and the community to ensure the best stories are published. | July 23, 2024 1:00 AM

POST FALLS — Bonners Ferry High rising senior Jaydin Falck was 7-for-13 with three extra-base hits and nine RBIs, Thompson Falls High rising senior Sarah Koskela threw a four-inning no-hitter, and The North 16U travel softball team took second place in the silver bracket at the Summer River Bash tournament held July 19-21 at Post Falls High.

The North 16U’s head coach Logan Conro said their finish at the tournament was the best in program history, and the girls battled through three games in 100-plus degree heat in order to achieve the feat.

The North started off the tourney Friday with a 6-2 win over the Villains 16U of Spokane Valley. Falck led the way at the plate, going 2-for-2. On the mound, Koskela threw 5 1/3 scoreless innings, giving up four hits and two walks while striking out nine batters in order to get the win.

On Saturday, The North tied the Lake City Thunder 14U 7-7 thanks to a five-run rally in the bottom of fifth inning, which was capped off by a two-run single by Leslie Gravier (Troy, Mont.). The North would find themselves 1-1-1 after the second day of play, having fallen 9-0 to the Liberty Lake Lightning 16U later in the day.

On Sunday, the final day of the tournament, The North came out hot with a 10-0 win over Charge Fastpitch of Moscow/Pullman. Koskela and Falck both had two hits and three RBIs each. This particular game also happened to be the one in which Koskela struck out six batters en route to a four-inning no-hitter. The North then kept the momentum rolling with a 12-4 win over the Velocity 18U of Spokane Valley. Falck went 2-for-3 with a triple and five RBIs to lead the way once again.

The North eventually found themselves in the championship game, falling 9-2 to the Fearless 18U of Coeur d'Alene. Bailey Lancaster (Sandpoint) helped plate the team’s only two runs with a two-run home run in the bottom of the fourth.

Overall, coach Conro noted it was an all-around team effort and that every single player made critical contributions this past weekend. Some specific contributions that may not have found themselves on the stat sheet were a diving catch by Baylie Hindle (Sandpoint), Hailey Dungan’s (Troy, Mont.) efforts behind the plate, and Addyson Fisher’s (Troy, Mont.) and Abi Miller’s (Sandpoint) countless effort plays.
