COEUR d’ALENE — Police are investigating the circumstances that led to a man’s death inside a burning house Sunday. 

The burned-out house was still taped off Monday morning, with investigators at the scene. 

“We don’t believe there’s any threat to the public still,” Sgt. Jared Reneau said Monday. 

Police responded around 2 p.m. Sunday to reports of a gunshot inside a residence on Ninth Street in Coeur d’Alene. 

When police arrived, a man outside the residence had a rifle slung across his back, according to police. The man allegedly did not comply with commands from police and went inside. 

Soon after, police said, “it became evident the house had been set on fire” and officers reported hearing gunshots from inside. By the time fire crews arrived, the residence was fully engulfed in flames. 

Coeur d’Alene Fire crews worked to extinguish the blaze. Surrounding homes were not affected. 

Detectives found one person dead inside the residence. Investigators were working to confirm the individual’s identity Monday, according to the Coeur d’Alene Police Department. The cause of death is not yet publicly known. 

It appears that only one person was involved in the incident, police said Monday.
