Then and Now: 50 years later, the future of the Roosevelt School building remains uncertain
HAILEY HILL | Hagadone News Network | UPDATED 1 year, 4 months AGO
Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, the Roosevelt School was the first high school in Coeur d' Alene before sitting abandoned for years. In 1974, the Coeur d' Alene School District exchanged the then-unused property for a larger parcel of land near Ramsey Road.
Now, the future of the historic site is still as uncertain as it was 50 years ago. Though "The Roosevelt Inn" has occupied the building for about 30 years, the site could be developed as the land has become valuable due to its proximity to downtown Coeur d'Alene, which has seen rapid growth in recent years. According to the Kootenai County Assessor's Office, the property is worth around $2.2 million.
Right now, the Roosevelt and other historic properties in Coeur d'Alene cannot be demolished by developers, at least through Dec. 17. Last month, the city council issued a temporary moratorium on demolition permits, leaving the fate of the Roosevelt and other historic sites in flux.
