Vanek, a rising freshman at Lakeland High, went 11 for 27 with five doubles and nine runs batted in for the Coeur d’Alene Crush 14U softball team in the Western National Championship in Lynnwood, Wash. last weekend, helping the Crush win the tournament title. In the semifinals, Vanek had a three-run double and stole home to give the Crush the lead for good. “She was a rock and came through with some big hits at some big times when we needed her,” Coeur d’Alene Crush coach Patti Davenport said. “She really lifted us over the top when we needed it.”
