LEGION BASEBALL: 16U Lakers fall in season-opening twinbill

by MAX OSWALD
I grew up in the small town of Orwigsburg, Pa., where I resided all of my life before moving to Sandpoint. I attended Blue Mountain High School, where I participated in cross country and track and field, a sport that I ended up falling in love with. I went on to attend and run for DeSales University (with other brief stints at Susquehanna University and Elizabethtown College) and graduated with a bachelor’s degree in sport communication with a minor in sport management. I remember just how great it made me feel when I was mentioned in my hometown newspaper. I want to be able to give that feeling to every athlete in Bonner County, no matter how big or small their accomplishments are. As an athlete myself, I know how many hours of work are put in on a daily basis, and that hard work deserves to be recognized. It is my goal to cover as much of the Bulldogs, Spartans and Wampus Cats as I can. I want to work with every athlete, parent, coach, administrator and the community to ensure the best stories are published. | June 1, 2024 5:45 PM

SANDPOINT — Jacob Alexander went 4-for-4 with four singles and three RBIs in the second game and the 16U North Idaho Lakers, who only fielded eight players, fell to the Lewis & Clark Tigers 19-11 and 24-14 in their season-opening series at War Memorial Field on Saturday.

In the first game, the Lakers trailed 6-1 heading into the bottom of third, but it was Weston Swen who was able to lead a three-run rally with an RBI single to bring the Lakers within two runs. North Idaho, however, would give up 13 runs in the top of the fourth. Down but not out, Karsen Garvin hit a two-run double, Jacob Alexander an RBI single, to lead the Lakers to a seven-run bottom of the fourth before the game would eventually be called due to time constraints.

In the second game, the Lakers scored three runs in the first inning, six in the fourth, but the Cubs used a 13-run second inning to take the victory. Alexander and Cy Marshall had RBI singles in both the first and the fourth to lead North Idaho. In the fourth inning, Garvin, Austyn Young and Noah Benner also notched RBI singles. The Lakers rallied for another five runs in the fifth after Alexander hit another RBI single, but couldn't escape the 10-run rule.

16U North Idaho (0-2) will head to the Premier Sports Invitational in Post Falls set to be held June 7-9.
