MOSES LAKE — Baseball and softball seasons have come and gone across the Columbia Basin, with state tournaments wrapping up last weekend. Read along for a look at where teams finished in their leagues, as well as districts and state tournaments.

Almira/Coulee-Hartline

Baseball

The Warriors reached the 1B State Baseball Tournament’s championship game for the first time since 2019 this spring, taking home a second-place finish in the 1B classification with a 6-0 loss to state champion Desales.

ACH had a bye to begin the state tournament, receiving the No. 3 seed. In the state quarterfinals against Northport, sophomore Caden Correia pitched all seven innings while surrendering one hit and three walks, striking out 10 Mustangs in a 1-0 win. Senior Jaxon Baergen drove in the game’s lone run on an RBI double in the bottom of the fourth inning.

Correia once again took the mound in the semifinals against No. 2 Naselle, the two-time defending state champion; the sophomore surrendered four hits and walked five batters, striking out eight Comets in an 11-1 win in five innings. Senior John Pierce led the Warriors with three RBI in the win, including a solo home run in the bottom of the fourth inning.

ACH finished the 2024 season with a 21-3 record, taking home its eighth placement at the state tournament.

Softball

After defeating Inchelium in the Northeast 1B district championship game, the Warriors began their regional tournament against Colton, suffering a 12-7 loss to the Wildcats. Colton didn’t look back after scoring four runs in the top of the third inning, taking a 6-4 lead over the Warriors before holding on for the win.

In the consolation bracket, ACH racked up 18 hits in a 15-1 defeat of Northport, led by three-hit days by freshman Madison Brink, sophomore Emma Brummett and freshman Josie Bayless. Each Warrior batter in the lineup had at least one hit on the day, as ACH advanced to take on DeSales in the consolation semifinals.

Against the Fighting Irish, a two-RBI single by senior Kady Murray gave the Warriors a 9-8 lead in the bottom of the fifth inning, which DeSales quickly regained after a three-run top of the sixth. Unable to overcome the deficit, ACH’s season ended in the regional tournament, finishing the year with an 18-5 record.

Ephrata

Baseball

Finishing fifth in the Central Washington Athletic Conference league standings, the Tigers matched up against Ellensburg in the first round of the district tournament, suffering a 6-3 loss to the Bulldogs. The two squads were tied at one after the first inning, but two-run outings in the bottom of the fourth and fifth innings helped Ellensburg advance over Ephrata.

Trailing 3-0 in the top of the fourth inning against East Valley (Yakima) in the consolation bracket, the Tigers cut the Red Devil lead to one with an RBI single by senior Cody Black and a bases-loaded walk, where senior Anson Gustafson scored. The Red Devil bats came alive in the bottom of the fifth and sixth innings, scoring a combined nine runs to run-rule the Tigers and advance in the district playoffs.

Ephrata ended the season with a 10-13 overall record.

Softball

The Tigers responded to a loss to Othello in the CWAC district championship game by defeating East Valley 15-1 on the road in the consolation finals, reaching the 2A State Softball Tournament for the first time since 2019.

After suffering a 14-0 loss to the eventual state runner-up Tumwater, Ephrata took an early 7-1 lead over Enumclaw in the first round of the consolation bracket; the early offensive barrage was headlined by senior Peyton Trautman, who delivered a two-run home run in the bottom of the first and a solo home run in the bottom of the second inning.

However, the Hornets scored four runs in the top of the seventh to send the game to extra innings; Enumclaw scored an additional three runs in the top of the eighth, which the Tigers were unable to answer.

Ephrata’s season came to a close with the 10-7 loss; the Tigers went 18-8 overall this spring.
