I grew up in the small town of Orwigsburg, Pa., where I resided all of my life before moving to Sandpoint. I attended Blue Mountain High School, where I participated in cross country and track and field, a sport that I ended up falling in love with. I went on to attend and run for DeSales University (with other brief stints at Susquehanna University and Elizabethtown College) and graduated with a bachelor’s degree in sport communication with a minor in sport management. I remember just how great it made me feel when I was mentioned in my hometown newspaper. I want to be able to give that feeling to every athlete in Bonner County, no matter how big or small their accomplishments are. As an athlete myself, I know how many hours of work are put in on a daily basis, and that hard work deserves to be recognized. It is my goal to cover as much of the Bulldogs, Spartans and Wampus Cats as I can. I want to work with every athlete, parent, coach, administrator and the community to ensure the best stories are published. | June 4, 2024 1:00 AM

TJ Davis, Eastern Oregon University Track & Field

The Cascade Collegiate Conference announced Thursday that Sandpoint alumni TJ Davis was named the 2024 CCC Rize Laboratory Track and Field Mens Athlete of the Year.

Athletes were nominated and voted on by the head track and field coaches in the conference.

After missing last season due to injuries, Davis won the 2024 NAIA National Championship in the decathlon. He led the Mountaineers to their fourth straight CCC title after winning the conference decathlon title for the third time in four years; he also won the 110-meter hurdles title this year. He is a five-time NAIA All-American (three outdoor, two indoor) and has won two national titles in total (won heptathlon in 2022).

He has recently received awards, including but not limited to being named the USTFCCCA West Region Field Athlete of the Year, and is now a two-time 2024 CCC Field Athlete of the Week.

Sara Hathaway, Lewis-Clark State College Track & Field

At the NAIA National Championships, which were held May 22-24 at Indiana Wesleyan University, Clark Fork’s Sara Hathaway competed in the 4x400 relay. Lewis-Clark State finished 21st in the preliminary round with a time of 3:53.65, the fourth-best time in program history.

Hathaway’s career as a Warrior is certainly one to remember. She is among the the top five in Lewis-Clark State history in a variety events: outdoor heptathlon (fourth with 3,986 points), outdoor high jump (second with 1.59 meters), outdoor 4x100 relay (second with 47.87 seconds), outdoor 400-meter hurdles (fifth with 1:03.92), outdoor 100-meter hurdles (second with 14.84 seconds), indoor heptathalon (fourth with 3,100 points), indoor high jump (second with 1.58 meters), indoor 60-meter hurdles (second with 9.05 seconds), and is a part of the the Warriors indoor 4x400 relay record of 3:55.24 set earlier this season. She is also a three-time NAIA Scholar Athlete and a CoSIDA Academic All-American.

Sandpoint's TJ Davis stands on the podium with one of his daughters after winning the NAIA National Championship in the decathlon.
