Basin events for June 7-14

MOSES LAKE — Activities abound this week in the Columbia Basin with festivals, car shows and a bunch of other fun activities to get out of the house and enjoy the early summer weather. If you're looking for something to do, Grant and Adams counties have plenty to offer over the next week. 

June 7-8

Sage ‘n Sun Festival

The 112th Sage ‘n Sun festival will take to the streets and Grant County Courthouse lawn with music and the annual parade. Three bands are scheduled for Friday night, and three more for Saturday night. The annual parade will roll and walk down Basin Street Southwest at 11 a.m. https://www.ephratachamber.org/ 

Grant County Historical Museum

The museum, 742 Basin St. SW, Ephrata, opens its doors for the summer with a car show, face painting barbecue and other activities immediately following the Sage ‘n Sun parade. Activities include stick horse races for children and an Old West shootout on the museum’s Main Street. 

June 8 

The Little Big Show

It’s one of the biggest events in Wilson Creek — it’s right there in the title. Cars, trucks, motorcycles, bicycles, basically anything with wheels, are invited to the Little Big Show. Participants are encouraged to register in advance at the Little Big Show website, www.thelittlebigshow.com.

Worksource Hiring Event

More than 25 local business owners will be available to talk with prospective employees. https://worksourcewa.com/ Worksource Central Basin, 309 East Fifth Ave., Moses Lake, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

“Before the Bomb: Old Hanford”

The Quincy Valley Historical Society & Museum sponsors a series of bus tours each summer, and June 2024 is a look at Hanford before it became a center for production of atomic bomb components. Part of the tour is a look at the remains of Hanford High School, which became offices, then a military training site. Bus leaves for the Hanford Manhattan Project Historical Site at 8:45 a.m., advance registration required; reservations can be made at www.qvhsm.org.

Tenth Annual Senior Picnic

“It’s Tiki Time” will be the theme of the 10th annual Senior Picnic and Resource Fair in the Commercial Building at the Grant County Fairgrounds from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The event is free for seniors. Along with lunch and live music, seniors will receive goodie bags and door prizes. Organizations will also provide information about services available to seniors. Grant County Fairgrounds, 3953 Airway Drive NE, Moses Lake.

Bring Your Own Book Club

Join other community members at the Othello Public Library to chat about books you have enjoyed lately. Readers of all genres are welcome. Othello Public Library, 101 E Main St., Othello, 5:45-6:45 p.m.

Live music at Gard

Mattawa Movie in the Park

Watch Disney’s Elemental and kick off summer with a bike party at Hund Memorial Park. The movie is sponsored by Heritage University. Bring your own blankets and chairs. Hund Memorial Park, 101 Government Rd., Mattawa, 4-9:30 p.m.

Thurston Wolfe Winery expands staff

PROSSER — Collin Meharg has joined the staff of Thurston Wolfe Winery as assistant winemaker. Meharg joins co-owner and winemaker Wade Wolfe and assistant winemaker Chris Wright. Meharg, a graduate of Central Washington University, said he got interested in winemaking because of his interest in chemistry. “I was a teaching assistant in the lab at CWU for two years and that piqued my interest,” he said in a press release announcing his hiring. He likes almost any kind of wine, he said, but has a preference for wine that’s more acidic.

WSU selects Elizabeth ‘Betsy’ Cantwell as new president of university

PULLMAN — Elizabeth “Betsy” Cantwell has been appointed as the 12th president of Washington State University, following a comprehensive nationwide search that identified over 260 candidates, according to a statement from the university. Cantwell is set to officially assume her role on April 1, succeeding Kirk Schulz, who has served as president since 2016 and who will continue as a senior advisor during the transition until June 2025. The WSU Board of Regents unanimously selected Cantwell during their recent meeting.
