LEGION BASEBALL: 19U Lakers split twinbill with Lewis-Clark
MAX OSWALD | Hagadone News Network | UPDATED 1 year, 6 months AGO
I grew up in the small town of Orwigsburg, Pa., where I resided all of my life before moving to Sandpoint. I attended Blue Mountain High School, where I participated in cross country and track and field, a sport that I ended up falling in love with. I went on to attend and run for DeSales University (with other brief stints at Susquehanna University and Elizabethtown College) and graduated with a bachelor’s degree in sport communication with a minor in sport management. I remember just how great it made me feel when I was mentioned in my hometown newspaper. I want to be able to give that feeling to every athlete in Bonner County, no matter how big or small their accomplishments are. As an athlete myself, I know how many hours of work are put in on a daily basis, and that hard work deserves to be recognized. It is my goal to cover as much of the Bulldogs, Spartans and Wampus Cats as I can. I want to work with every athlete, parent, coach, administrator and the community to ensure the best stories are published. | June 11, 2024 8:15 PM
19U LAKERS
LEWISTON — After Jorden Tyler pitched the Lakers to a 2-1 win in the first game, the team almost pulled off the impossible in the second game, scoring 11 unanswered runs in a 14-12 loss as North Idaho split a doubleheader with the Lewis-Clark Cubs at Harris Field on Tuesday.
In the first game, the Lakers scored both their runs in the top of the first inning. Mason Little, who singled to lead off the game, scored on an error and Dallen Williams hit a sacrifice fly to center to score Soren Caprio, who walked earlier in the inning. On the mound, Tyler pitched a gem, putting in six innings of work and giving up just four hits, one earned run and three walks while striking out eight batters. Williams pitched a 1-2-3 seventh inning in relief, which included two strikeouts, to record his first save of the season.
In the second game, Williams started things off by hitting an RBI single to left in the first, but Lewis-Clark responded with 10 runs in the bottom half of the inning and four more in the third to take a 14-1 lead. In the fifth, the Lakers bats got hot. Finn Mellander, Gavin Day, Parker Reichart and Jacob Hansen all hit RBI singles to narrow the deficit to eight runs. In the sixth, it was much of the same as Caprio hit an RBI single and North Idaho put up five more runs thanks to a couple of errors and fielder’s choice. Down 14-11 heading into the final inning, Mellander hit a sacrifice fly to left, but the Lakers would fall just two runs shy after the huge rally. In relief, Caprio single-handedly kept North Idaho in the game after pitching 5 ⅓ innings, giving up four hits, no earned runs and two walks while striking out six batters.
North Idaho (4-1) takes on Coeur d’Alene Lumbermen at home today.
