KELLOGG — There wasn’t necessarily a fully realized plan in mind in 2019 when Ashley Malcolm bought the property on Emerson Lane, but the opportunity was too good for her to pass up.

“I love creating spaces and designing them. I just fell in love with the building, it was this robin egg blue, very country kitchen look,” Malcolm said.

Malcolm eventually decided to transform the venue into a bar with an art retail component.

“Kellogg just doesn’t have a lot of places in the way of art retail and my first love is beer. I’ve been a brewer for 20 years, and Nocturn is basically the little sister of Radio (Brewing),” Malcolm said, referring to another company Malcolm owns.

Art and galleries have always been a passion for Malcolm, and she worked for a time as an apprentice printmaker. A printing press from the early 1900s accompanied her during her travels around the country, but it finally found a home at Nocturn, where Malcolm wants to use it for in-house printmaking for cards and other small pieces.

One long-term goal for Malcolm is to bring in artists for monthly classes at Nocturn.

Nocturn’s manager, Molly Roberts, said the food menu ranges from charcuterie spreads and Greek dolmas to crepes on Saturdays and Sundays. Artisanal items are on offer as well.

“As we grow, we want more oddities and to feature local artists," Roberts said, adding they may move into online sales as well.

Nocturn is a bar with a focus on wine and an art retail shop. Owner Ashley Malcolm is also the owner of Radio Brewing Company.

A press at Nocturn will be used for printmaking projects. The bar and art retail venue is located in Kellogg on Emerson Lane.

'Holidays and Heroes' on Sunday

Holidays and Heroes is back for the 27th year of the event, something Post Falls Police Lieutenant Brian Harrison describes as “a madhouse all at once” as 120 kids pair up with first responders to shop for holiday necessities for local families on Sunday. Lots of planning and coordination comes to fruition on Sunday as 15-16 first responder agencies and 30 community partners make the season a little brighter for families in need.
