Coeur54 sets fundraising record

For Dustin Ainsworth, playing golf with friends is a great day. But playing golf with friends to raise money for a nonprofit is even better. 

Coeur54, which saw 16 players play 54 holes on three courses June 4, had a record year of fundraising. 

The majority of funds, $30,000, will go to local 4-H programs, while other nonprofits will receive smaller amounts. 

“To go out there and do something we love, there is something special about that,” Ainsworth said. 

Tami Goetz, regional educator for the 4-H northern district, said the funds will help provide more opportunities for youth to get involved in programs like livestock, summer camp, shooting sports and STEM education. 

“Learning by doing is a significant part of 4-H youth development,” Goetz said. 

Between Kootenai and Shoshone counties, there are more than 600 youth involved in 4-H, making participation here the second largest in the state. 

Ainsworth said they are glad to do what they can for the kids.

“It’s a fundraiser, first and foremost,” he said. 

The 54 Foundation was founded in 2020 by a group of eight guys with a passion for golf and the desire to assist nonprofits in Kootenai County.  

In its five years, it has raised more than $150,000. 

Previous main beneficiaries from Coeur54 include CdAIDE, Village of Hope, First Tee of North Idaho, Newby-ginnings and Specialized Needs Recreation.  

This year's donations went beyond expectations.

“When we told people we were going to be golfing all day for 4-H, they wanted to contribute,” Ainsworth said.  

The players started their day at Coeur d'Alene Golf Club. Next, they headed to Avondale Golf Club in Hayden Lake and wrapped up their day at Hayden Lake Country Club. The courses allow the golfers to play for free to help reduce expenses. Henry Griffitts provided attire.

While it’s in good fun, there is a competitive side.  

Brennan Stillinger took low-gross honors, while John McKeeman posted the best net score. 

Ainsworth said the success of Coeur54 could be attributed to the passion of the golfers, who work hard to raise money, and the community’s support.  

"To be able to raise that kind of money for such an incredible organization like 4-H is an honor," he said.

15,000 geraniums planted as tradition carries on

In less than two hours, they planted about 15,000 of the hardy flowers in front of The Resort and around companies properties, including the Boardwalk Marina, Hagadone Corp. headquarters, The Resort Golf Course and Hagadone Event center. While the different departments were competing for the “Grand Champion Gardeners” trophy by being the fastest and the best geranium planters, they shared a camaraderie to carry on a decade-old tradition that benefits not just The Resort, but the community.
