LEGION BASEBALL: 19U Lakers drop pair of heartbreakers to Northern Lakes
MAX OSWALD | Hagadone News Network | UPDATED 1 year, 5 months AGO
I grew up in the small town of Orwigsburg, Pa., where I resided all of my life before moving to Sandpoint. I attended Blue Mountain High School, where I participated in cross country and track and field, a sport that I ended up falling in love with. I went on to attend and run for DeSales University (with other brief stints at Susquehanna University and Elizabethtown College) and graduated with a bachelor’s degree in sport communication with a minor in sport management. I remember just how great it made me feel when I was mentioned in my hometown newspaper. I want to be able to give that feeling to every athlete in Bonner County, no matter how big or small their accomplishments are. As an athlete myself, I know how many hours of work are put in on a daily basis, and that hard work deserves to be recognized. It is my goal to cover as much of the Bulldogs, Spartans and Wampus Cats as I can. I want to work with every athlete, parent, coach, administrator and the community to ensure the best stories are published. | June 26, 2024 9:45 PM
SANDPOINT — Sage Medeiros and Dallen Williams both produced multi-hit games, but the 19U North Idaho Lakers fell just shy of the Northern Lakes, 4-3, in both games of their doubleheader on Wednesday at War Memorial Field.
In the first game, the Lakers scored three runs in the first inning to start things off. Mason Little led off the game with the contest’s only triple and Sage Medeiros singled to center a couple of at-bats later to score the first run. Chase Sanroman would reach base on an error later in the inning, which drove in two more runs.
North Idaho only had two hits throughout the rest of the game and the visiting Mountaineers plated three runs of their own in the top of the third to tie the game. In the top of the seventh, Caleb Mason, who was 3-for-4 with two doubles, a single, and two RBIs, hit the go-ahead run in with a line drive single down the first base line. The Lakers were unable to respond in the bottom half of the inning.
Dallen Williams got the start on the mound for the Lakers and threw four innings, giving up five hits, three earned runs and three walks while striking out three batters. Cole Sanroman pitched three solid innings in relief, allowing just two hits and striking out one batter.
Also of note, Jorden Tyler and Little both had crucial double plays in the first game. Tyler, who had a plethora of putouts at third base between both games, made a diving stop in the fifth inning to turn a 5-4-3 double play. Little’s came in the top of the seventh when he leaped as high as he could in the air to make the run-saving catch and then threw out a runner attempting to advance.
The second game was another close one, with the contest not being decided until extra innings. This time, it was the Mountaineers who struck first with three runs in the first inning. In the bottom of the fourth, Medeiros, Finn Mellander, and Williams hit back-to-back-to-back singles to bring the Lakers’ first run across the board. With two out and two on, Tyler then hit a two-run double to center field to tie the game at three. After seven innings, the score still remained tied, but the Mountaineers broke through in the eighth when Ethan Pecor singled to left to bring in the go-ahead run. In the bottom of the eighth, Medeiros and Williams reached base yet again but Northern Lakes' Eric Wylie retired the side for the save and the win.
Medeiros, in addition to a great day at the plate, was also excellent on the mound in game two for the Lakers, going seven innings and giving up six hits, four earned runs and two walks while striking out seven batters.
The North Idaho Lakers (10-7) will be back in action July 4-6 at the Spokane Wood Bat Classic.
