PREP SOFTBALL: White’s 7 RBI’s lifts Priest River to win in season-opener

I grew up in the small town of Orwigsburg, Pa., where I resided all of my life before moving to Sandpoint. I attended Blue Mountain High School, where I participated in cross country and track and field, a sport that I ended up falling in love with. I went on to attend and run for DeSales University (with other brief stints at Susquehanna University and Elizabethtown College) and graduated with a bachelor’s degree in sport communication with a minor in sport management. I remember just how great it made me feel when I was mentioned in my hometown newspaper. I want to be able to give that feeling to every athlete in Bonner County, no matter how big or small their accomplishments are. As an athlete myself, I know how many hours of work are put in on a daily basis, and that hard work deserves to be recognized. It is my goal to cover as much of the Bulldogs, Spartans and Wampus Cats as I can. I want to work with every athlete, parent, coach, administrator and the community to ensure the best stories are published. | March 11, 2024 7:10 PM

PRIEST RIVER — Priest River’s Helena White hit two singles, a double, and a three-run homerun as the Spartans took down Timberlake JV, 18-8 in their season-opener at Priest River Junior High on Monday.
Priest River gained momentum before even getting a chance to swing the bats. In the top of the first, Kae Brown caught a pop fly in left field and the Spartans then caught two runners attempting to advance, turning a triple play. After scoring four runs in the bottom half of the inning, Brown then hit an RBI single to extend the Spartans lead to 5-0 in the bottom of the second.
In the bottom of third, Helena White and Unity Halcomb both hit RBI doubles, Cheyenne Thompson an RBI single, to give the Spartans a 10-2 lead. Thompson was also fantastic on the mound, going 4 2/3 innings and giving up no hits, three earned runs, and striking out five.
Later on in the fourth, White struck again, homering on a line drive to right field that drove in three runs. In the fifth, White hit another RBI single while Brown and Rylee Hansen each hit RBI doubles to finish out the game, 10-run ruling the Tigers.
Priest River (1-0) will travel to play Grangeville on Saturday.
