COLLEGE NOTEBOOK: Newhart, Ambridge record college firsts

MAX OSWALD | Hagadone News Network | UPDATED 1 year, 9 months AGO
by MAX OSWALD
I grew up in the small town of Orwigsburg, Pa., where I resided all of my life before moving to Sandpoint. I attended Blue Mountain High School, where I participated in cross country and track and field, a sport that I ended up falling in love with. I went on to attend and run for DeSales University (with other brief stints at Susquehanna University and Elizabethtown College) and graduated with a bachelor’s degree in sport communication with a minor in sport management. I remember just how great it made me feel when I was mentioned in my hometown newspaper. I want to be able to give that feeling to every athlete in Bonner County, no matter how big or small their accomplishments are. As an athlete myself, I know how many hours of work are put in on a daily basis, and that hard work deserves to be recognized. It is my goal to cover as much of the Bulldogs, Spartans and Wampus Cats as I can. I want to work with every athlete, parent, coach, administrator and the community to ensure the best stories are published. | March 15, 2024 12:00 PM

Cody Newhart, Lackawanna College Baseball

Sandpoint’s Cody Newhart recorded his first collegiate hit and RBI for the Falcons recently. On March 8 against Minnesota North College, Newhart went 1-for-2, recording a single in the top of the sixth as Lackawanna went on to win 12-5. On March 13 against Kingsborough Community College, Newhart hit a two-run double in the top of the seventh; the Falcons went on to win that game as well, 20-7.

Lackawanna College (4-10) will travel to play Frederick Community College on Saturday.

Forest Ambridge, Southern Virginia University Lacrosse

Sandpoint’s Forest Ambridge recorded his first collegiate assist for the Spartans in a 2-18 loss to Grove City College. His assist came with 5:18 remaining in the second quarter; teammate Peyton Merwin was the goal-scorer.

Southern Virginia (1-6) travels to Piedmont (Georgia) on Saturday.

Camille Ussher, Spokane CC Track & Field

Bonners Ferry native Camille Ussher recently signed with the Lewis-Clark State College cross country and track and field teams. Ussher helped the Sasquatch to an NWAC cross-country title in 2023 and is an NJCAA All-American in cross country as well as in track and field (800m and 4x400m relay). She boasts personal records of 19:10 in the 5k, 2:22.51 in the 800, and 4:53.09 in the 1500, which she set March 2 at the Ed Boitano Invitational hosted by the University of Puget Sound.
