Women's homesteading class this Saturday

I’ve spent most of my life in northeastern Washington and graduated from Eastern Washington University in 2021. After that, I spent roughly two years working for a small online newspaper in North Seattle before realizing big city living wasn’t for me. Me and my pup, Kodak, headed east, where we eventually landed in Sandpoint. When I’m not writing, you can find me spending time exercising and taking photos. I ran two half marathons in high school and after spending the past few years recovering from various injuries, I’m hoping to complete my first full marathon by the end of the year. I also love any outdoor activity, none of which would be complete without my dog. Kodak and I love going for walks and hikes, and I can’t wait to try to convince him to get in my kayak and spend the hot months of the year on Lake Pend Oreille. SAGLE — Want to learn gardening techniques but don’t think you have the space?
This Saturday, the National Ladies Homestead Gathering is putting on a free event that will teach women all about square foot gardening, which maximizes even the smallest spaces to produce home-grown foods.
“This approach is a fantastic way for beginners and advanced gardeners alike to learn how to optimize spacing when planting so that they yield the most produce possible,” said Linsday Hollenback, a member of Bonner County’s Ladies Homestead Gathering chapter. “This high-intensity planting design makes food independency accessible for those using just a few containers or an entire acre.”
With this year’s theme being, “You can do it,” the event will also feature a demonstration on how to use a chainsaw, provided by VIP Ladies Homestead Gathering member Michele Walker.
All levels of interest and homesteading experience are welcome to this event March 16. Teens 16 and older as well as nursing babies under one year old are allowed at the event, but attendees are asked to find childcare for their other children.
Women who attend are not required to own acreage or livestock and are encouraged to take away tips that will benefit the space they are in now.
“It is our hope that ladies will leave feeling confident to get outside and get their hands in the dirt,” Hollenback said. “Gardening not only feeds our bellies but also our hearts.”
The event begins at 1 p.m. and will be held at New Song Bible Church, 470250 U.S. 95 in Sagle.
