PREP BASEBALL: Sandpoint drops two in twinbill against Post Falls
MAX OSWALD | Hagadone News Network | UPDATED 10 months, 2 weeks AGO
I grew up in the small town of Orwigsburg, Pa., where I resided all of my life before moving to Sandpoint. I attended Blue Mountain High School, where I participated in cross country and track and field, a sport that I ended up falling in love with. I went on to attend and run for DeSales University (with other brief stints at Susquehanna University and Elizabethtown College) and graduated with a bachelor’s degree in sport communication with a minor in sport management. I remember just how great it made me feel when I was mentioned in my hometown newspaper. I want to be able to give that feeling to every athlete in Bonner County, no matter how big or small their accomplishments are. As an athlete myself, I know how many hours of work are put in on a daily basis, and that hard work deserves to be recognized. It is my goal to cover as much of the Bulldogs, Spartans and Wampus Cats as I can. I want to work with every athlete, parent, coach, administrator and the community to ensure the best stories are published. | March 16, 2024 8:35 PM
SANDPOINT – Sandpoint battled hard, but fell to the Trojans 12-5 and 12-6, in a doubleheader at War Memorial Field Saturday afternoon.
In Game 1, Post Falls led 4-0 early on, and 9-3 after four innings, eventually sealing the deal with three more runs in the top of the seventh. Sandpoint’s lone RBI came from a sacrifice fly by Lucas Hansen in the bottom of the second. Hansen batted in Greyson Johnson, who tripled to deep center field in the at-bat prior.
Dallen Williams led the Bulldogs on the base paths. The sophomore standout went 2-for-4 with two singles and two runs scored. Junior Jesse Turner was solid on the mound in the last three innings, giving up just three hits, no earned runs, and striking out six batters.
“Jesse has been slow to get going after dealing with some injuries,” head coach Ricky Klontz said. “He’s been coming back from it and I thought he was ready today, and he definitely proved that.”
In Game 2, Sandpoint hung around until giving up nine runs in the fourth inning. Early on, Parker Reichart, who also had a stolen base the contest, hit an RBI single to center to tie the game 1-1. Brent Campbell also hit a two-run single in the bottom of the third to tie the game 3-3. Reichart would record another RBI on a fielder’s choice later in the contest.
On the mound, Sandpoint’s Jayden Kuprienko went 2 1/3 innings in relief, giving up just two walks and striking out two.
“I thought Brent threw well and so did Jayden in relief,” Klontz said. “That was a big positive for us. In general, however, it was a tough day, and our next step is to figure out how to eliminate those big innings.”
Sandpoint (1-3) will host West Valley on Thursday.
