COEUR d’ALENE — The deadline to file for the May 21 primary election has passed. The following candidates filed by 5 p.m. Friday.

The District 1 commissioner race is crowded, with Republicans Marc Eberline, Dale Gibbony, Bat Masterson, Tim Plass and John Padula all vying for the seat occupied by two-term commissioner Bill Brooks, who has served since 2018. Brooks confirmed last year that he would not run for reelection.

District 3 Commissioner Leslie Duncan will face fellow Republican Brett Surplus in the primary. Independent candidate Roger Rowland has filed but will not appear on the May primary ballot.

Kootenai County Sheriff Bob Norris faces a lone Republican challenger for his office, Mike Bauer. Three independent candidates have also filed — Justin Nagel, Dan Wilson and Kyle Woodward — though they will not appear on the ballot in May.

Kootenai County Prosecuting Attorney Stanely Mortensen will run unopposed in the primary.

This year, all 105 seats in the Idaho Legislature are up for election.

Rep. Vito Barbieri, R-Dalton Gardens, will face Democrat Dale Broadsword in the District 3 House race, while Rep. Jordan Redman, R-Coeur d’Alene, will face Democrat Steve Bruno, also in District 3.

Rep. Joe Alfieri, R-Coeur d’Alene, will run for reelection to his District 4 seat. Angela Jean Chandler, a Democrat, will also run.

Rep. Elaine Price, R-Coeur d’Alene, will face challenger Dave Raglin in the Republican primary race for her District 4 seat in the House. Democrat Paula Marano has also filed.

Bob Nonini, who served in the Legislature for 14 years, filed to run for the House in District 5. The longtime Republican will run as an independent candidate, vying for the seat now held by Rep. Ron Mendive, R-Coeur d’Alene. Democrat Kristy Reed Johnson has also entered the race.

Rep. Tony Wisniewski, R-Post Falls, is running for reelection to his District 5 seat in the House. Democrat Teresa Borrenpohl has also filed. Wisniewski won when the two candidates squared off for the same House seat in 2022.

Sen. Doug Okuniewicz, R-Hayden, will face Democrat Brian Seguin in the general election for the District 3 Senate seat.

In District 4, Sen. Ben Toews, R-Coeur d’Alene, will square off against Democrat Carissa Hober.

Sen. Carl Bjerke, R-Coeur d’Alene, will face Republican challenger Cheri Zao in the District 5 primary race. Democrat Adam Chapman is also running.

In Idaho’s 1st Congressional District, incumbent Republican Rep. Russ Fulcher has filed to run. Libertarian Party candidate Matt Loesby, Democrat Kaylee Peterson and Constitution Party candidate Brendan J. Gomez will also run.

Incumbent Rep. Mike Simpson will face Republican challengers Scott Cleveland and Sean Higgins in Idaho’s 2nd Congressional District.

Constitution Party candidates Idaho Law - Carta Sierra and Pro-Life (a person formerly known as Marvin Richardson) have filed for the congressional race. Democrat David Roth and Libertarian Party candidate Todd Corsetti will also run.

Partisan candidates may withdraw from the primary election through March 29.

Community Library Network’s new policies could fracture regional library consortium

For decades, the Community Information Network has enabled libraries in North Idaho and eastern Washington to share their collections and broadened patrons’ access to materials. Now a restrictive policy for minor library cardholders in the Community Library Network, unlike any other in the library consortium, could mean that patrons across the region lose access to library materials.
