Community writing contest this Saturday

I’ve spent most of my life in northeastern Washington and graduated from Eastern Washington University in 2021. After that, I spent roughly two years working for a small online newspaper in North Seattle before realizing big city living wasn’t for me. Me and my pup, Kodak, headed east, where we eventually landed in Sandpoint. When I’m not writing, you can find me spending time exercising and taking photos. I ran two half marathons in high school and after spending the past few years recovering from various injuries, I’m hoping to complete my first full marathon by the end of the year. I also love any outdoor activity, none of which would be complete without my dog. Kodak and I love going for walks and hikes, and I can’t wait to try to convince him to get in my kayak and spend the hot months of the year on Lake Pend Oreille. While he’s not a fan of baths, he sure does love chasing the ducks. | March 19, 2024 1:00 AM
SANDPOINT — A community writing contest is being held this Saturday at the Bonner County Library to encourage local writers to showcase their recent work.
Writers of all ages are encouraged to enter this free contest, hosted by Sandpoint Writers on the Lake. With sign-up starting at 8:30 a.m. and readings beginning at 9:30 a.m., writers will have five minutes each to share their work with the audience, who will then vote on which piece should win.
There will be two age groups: Adult — 18 years and older as well as youth — 17 years and younger. The most voted on piece in each age group will win $50, while a runner up from each will win $25. One grand prize winner will also be announced overall, and will be awarded $100.
“Any unpublished fiction, non-fiction or poetry [is] eligible,” a Writers on the Lake member said, “keeping in mind our youthful audience.”
All contestant entrants will also receive a free book from a selection of published works by Sandpoint Writers on the Lake authors.
Snacks will be provided throughout the event. For more information, contact Jim Payne at jimpayne@nctv.com or (208) 263-3564. Inquiries can also be directed to sandpointwriters@gmail.com.
