PREP LACROSSE: Sandpoint boys take one of three games at Boise tourney

I grew up in the small town of Orwigsburg, Pa., where I resided all of my life before moving to Sandpoint. I attended Blue Mountain High School, where I participated in cross country and track and field, a sport that I ended up falling in love with. I went on to attend and run for DeSales University (with other brief stints at Susquehanna University and Elizabethtown College) and graduated with a bachelor’s degree in sport communication with a minor in sport management. I remember just how great it made me feel when I was mentioned in my hometown newspaper. I want to be able to give that feeling to every athlete in Bonner County, no matter how big or small their accomplishments are. As an athlete myself, I know how many hours of work are put in on a daily basis, and that hard work deserves to be recognized. It is my goal to cover as much of the Bulldogs, Spartans and Wampus Cats as I can. I want to work with every athlete, parent, coach, administrator and the community to ensure the best stories are published. | March 19, 2024 6:30 PM

NAMPA — Sandpoint fell to Coronado (Nevada) and Vallivue, but finished off the Boise Invitational with a 12-1 win over Helena this past weekend.

Overall, senior Blayne Kanning led the Bulldogs with six goals scored throughout the tournament, which was held March 15-16 at Northwest Nazarene University. Kanning scored one goal against both Coronado and Vallivue, and led the team with four goals against Helena. Kostas Bauck and Austin Waud added three goals each. Jacob Aexel, Bauck, and Lucas Garrison all tallied two assists.

In the groundball department, Wylie Wimmer led Sandpoint with 12 over all three games. Gage McElroy picked up 11 ground balls, Sawyer Treadaway 10. In net, Ryan Doko saved 42 of the 60 shots he faced (.700%) and went a perfect 8-for-8 in the win over Helena.

“The invitational went really well,” head coach Ty Wilson said. “All things considered, with it being our first games of the season and playing against a few teams that have already seen multiple games, I’m happy with how we performed. With a few changes, our team this year will be looking very solid for our upcoming games.”

Sandpoint (1-2) will be back in action Thursday, March 28 at Central Valley.
