A smaller than average turnout this year has Plains High School counting on quality over quantity.

The boys team will rest its hopes on a pair of returning seniors, while the girls golfers will be hoping a pair of underclassmen can fare well in the about to begin 2024 season.

Head coach Lisa Brown graciously acknowledged the boys turn out was smaller than anticipated, due in large part to the number of boys who decided to go out for the school’s baseball team instead of golfing.

“We anticipated more golfers but had several choose to try baseball this year, which is OK,” coach Brown said. “You can golf forever, but you only get this opportunity to play high school baseball. That may seem like a bad attitude for a coach to have, but I truly believe the kids need to take advantage of those opportunities when they present themselves.”

So heading into the season, the boys team pins its hopes on the two seniors who came out for another year of golf, Drew Carey and Brandt Sneed. Both are entering thier fourth season as members of the golf team and Brown is optimistic about their chances of getting to the state meet at the end of the year.

“They have been with the program for the past three years and I am hoping this senior season will be the one that gets them to the state golf tournament,” Brown said. “They have the ability to do it, it will just be a matter of managing their game to minimize mistakes and make sound decisions after a missed shot”.

Meanwhile, the girls welcome a pair of newcomers to their ranks, sophomore Eleanor Bebb, and eighth grader Cheyenne Little Whirlwind.

“Cheyenne has participated in our golf camp and both of them are new to the team this year,” Brown said.

The Plains golfers host Superior and Thompson Falls this Friday at 1 p.m. to kick off their season. They travel to Hamilton April 4th where they will participate in the Darby/Florence Invitational.
