I grew up in the small town of Orwigsburg, Pa., where I resided all of my life before moving to Sandpoint. I attended Blue Mountain High School, where I participated in cross country and track and field, a sport that I ended up falling in love with. I went on to attend and run for DeSales University (with other brief stints at Susquehanna University and Elizabethtown College) and graduated with a bachelor’s degree in sport communication with a minor in sport management. I remember just how great it made me feel when I was mentioned in my hometown newspaper. I want to be able to give that feeling to every athlete in Bonner County, no matter how big or small their accomplishments are. As an athlete myself, I know how many hours of work are put in on a daily basis, and that hard work deserves to be recognized. It is my goal to cover as much of the Bulldogs, Spartans and Wampus Cats as I can. I want to work with every athlete, parent, coach, administrator and the community to ensure the best stories are published. | March 27, 2024 3:00 PM

CENTRALIA, Wash. — Sandpoint's Shane Sherrill (Junior 138) led all area wrestlers, winning seven matches to place sixth in Freestyle at USAW Northwest Regionals held March 23-24 at the Northwest Sportshub.

After losing in the second round, Sherill won six straight consolation matches to make it into the fifth-sixth place match, where he officially placed sixth out of 42 wrestlers. Overall, Sherrill finished 7-3, winning three matches by pin and four by technical fall.

Sandpoint’s Dominic Ratigan (14U 149) and Aidan Rork (Junior 113) also participated in the tournament. Ratigan finished fourth in both Freestyle and Greco-Roman, notching one win in each style. Rork won one match in Freestyle. Bonners Ferry’s Taylor Dodd (16U 285) was fourth in Freestyle, picking up two wins by technical fall.

Bonners Ferry’s Savannah Rickter (Junior 155) was the top local on the girls’ side, winning the Greco-Roman championship after two matches; she also picked up two wins in Freestyle. Rickter finished the weekend with a 4-2 overall record between both styles, winning three matches by pin and one by technical fall.

Shelby Garten (16U 130) of Timberlake placed second in Freestyle, winning three matches to qualify for the championship where she lost by a narrow 10-7 decision. Also picking up a win by pin in Freestyle was Bonners Ferry’s Aubree Graves (16U 130).

Wrestlers had to battle opponents from Idaho, Washington, Alaska, California, Oregon, Colorado and Montana at the regional tournament.

Shelby Garten shows off the medal she won in Freestyle at USAW Northwest Regionals. Garten's second-place finish qualifies her for USAW Freestyle/Greco Nationals in Fargo this summer.
