Spring burning requires permits beginning Wednesday, May 1, on the Flathead Reservation and continues through June 30. Landowners may apply for permits at the Division of Fire website, csktfire.org.

While burning can help clear dead vegetation and clean up overgrown grass and debris, Division of Fire spokesman C.T. Camel, urges caution. “Careless debris burning is one of the main causes of wildfire on the Flathead Indian Reservation.”

He suggested taking the following precautions to make sure a burn does not become the next wildfire. If you intend to burn, have in place:

• A current weather forecast for the local area

• Water source (such as a hose, buckets, pond or lake)

• Fire tools or equipment depending on the size of the burn

• Enough help to respond in the event that fire behavior increases.

Those planning to burn debris should also begin early in the day and check the weather forecast for afternoon and next-day wind conditions.

“Do not burn when high or erratic winds are forecast or dry conditions prevail,” he suggests. “Have proper personnel, equipment and water supply with you and always make sure the area is cold to the touch before leaving.”

It’s also important to check the fire the following day, since stumps or roots may hold heat that could re-ignite.

If a fire gets out of control call 911 immediately.

“Remember you are responsible for any and all suppression, property costs if your fire escapes your control,” Camel adds.
