4A DISTRICT 1-2 BASEBALL: Sandpoint comes up short against Moscow

I grew up in the small town of Orwigsburg, Pa., where I resided all of my life before moving to Sandpoint. I attended Blue Mountain High School, where I participated in cross country and track and field, a sport that I ended up falling in love with. I went on to attend and run for DeSales University (with other brief stints at Susquehanna University and Elizabethtown College) and graduated with a bachelor’s degree in sport communication with a minor in sport management. I remember just how great it made me feel when I was mentioned in my hometown newspaper. I want to be able to give that feeling to every athlete in Bonner County, no matter how big or small their accomplishments are. As an athlete myself, I know how many hours of work are put in on a daily basis, and that hard work deserves to be recognized. It is my goal to cover as much of the Bulldogs, Spartans and Wampus Cats as I can. I want to work with every athlete, parent, coach, administrator and the community to ensure the best stories are published. | May 8, 2024 8:15 PM
MOSCOW — Drew Lehman, Finn Mellander, and Jesse Turner all had doubles for Sandpoint, but it was Moscow who clinched the 4A Inland Empire League district title with a 10-2 win over the Bulldogs on Wednesday.
In the top of the first inning is where Sandpoint scored both of their runs. Dallen Williams grounded into a fielder’s choice to score one. The very next at-bat, Jesse Turner drove a ball to deep left to score Williams. Mason Little and Lucas Hansen were also able to knock singles in the contest. Sandpoint trailed just 3-2 heading into the bottom of the sixth, but the Bears put up a seven-run frame to seal the deal.
“We had a lot of chances, but it just unraveled on us in the sixth,” head coach Ricky Klontz said. “We definitely didn’t have the season we wanted or expected, but I am super proud of how we finished the year. We competed really hard here at districts and gave ourselves a chance.”
Sandpoint finished the season 7-17 with two wins over both Lakeland and Timberlake, and one each over West Valley, Bonners Ferry and Coeur d’Alene.
