COEUR d'ALENE — Ten Dr. Jack Riggs Leadership Scholarship recipients received $1,000 each for their college education. Awards were given based on an exceptional display of leadership in their schools, communities and families.

Two additional students received the Markham Continuing Education Scholarship and were awarded $4,500 each. A total of $19,000 in scholarship funds were awarded.

Recipients were recognized at the Midge and Pepper Smock Family Theatre at The Kroc.

Major Ben Markham, Dr. Jack Riggs, and donor Dr. John Huckabay were in attendance, along with Kroc Advisory Board members and staff, who celebrated with the winners and their families.

The Dr. Riggs Leadership Scholarship was created by The Salvation Army Kroc Center executive staff and advisory board to honor Jack Riggs, M.D., for a lifetime of leadership excellence.

The Major Benton Markham Continuing Education Scholarship was created by Dr. John Huckabay in 2019 to honor Markham’s vision of providing significant financial support to a deserving student pursuing a college degree or certificate.

"This scholarship celebrates higher education as a means to financial autonomy and growing a student’s God-given talents," a press release said.

The event was sponsored by Idaho Central Credit Union.
