STATE HIGH SCHOOL TRACK AND FIELD: A surprising lift for St. Maries' Lambson in 2A

St. Maries coach Aaron Cloud wasn’t surprised by the throw by senior Alexzander Lambson to claim the state 2A discus title.

It was more what Lambson did to celebrate his first title.

Lambson, who has signed with Lewis-Clark State, won the state 2A boys discus title on Friday afternoon with a throw of 158 feet, 10 inches at Middleton High, site of the 3A, 2A and 1A meets.

Lambson notched his winning mark on his fourth attempt, beating Grangeville's Cutter Robinson, who was second at 142-2.

“It was a good feeling when I let it go,” Lambson said. “It really felt great. I knew after they announced it that it was going to be the furthest on the day.”

Following the announcement that he had won, the 6-foot-3, 205-pound Lambson raised Cloud over his head in celebration.

“I wasn’t surprised he did it, but just how easily he did it,” Cloud said. “Alexzander hasn’t just been telling me what he was going to do since high school. He’s had his eyes on this since middle school. When he sees me, he’s been coming up to me and telling me what he’s going to do.”

Lambson was fifth in the discus as a junior.

“He definitely believed it,” Cloud said. “It’s another thing to see him do it, and he delivered it pretty hard.”

In the 5A meet at Mountain View High in Meridian, the Coeur d’Alene boys 4x800-meter relay team of Max Cervi-Skinner, Jacob King, Zack Cervi-Skinner and Lachlan May finished runner-up in 7:54.90. Boise won it in 7:52.05. Max Cervi-Skinner was runner-up in the 3,200 (9:06.85), followed by Zack Cervi-Skinner fourth (9:14.74) and Wyatt Carr sixth (9:19.78). Landon Heemeyer of Rocky Mountain won it in 9:02.01.

Coeur d’Alene is third in the boys team standings with 24 points.
