NWAC GOLF CHAMPIONSHIPS: NIC men, women lead after first day

YAKIMA, Wash. — North Idaho College sophomore Laila Jalil shot 79 on the first day for a one-stroke lead at the Northwest Athletic Conference golf championships Sunday at Apple Tree Golf Course.
NIC’s women shot 249 and lead by 15 strokes over Bellevue College.
Ava Young and Sofia Lippiello of NIC shot 85 and are tied for fifth.
NIC’s men shot 285 and lead Community Colleges of Spokane by seven strokes after the first day. The Cardinal men have won five straight NWAC championships.
Josh McCartain fired a 3-under-par 69 and is in fourth place. Spence Matson (71) is tied for fifth, Charlie Terwilliger (72) is seventh and Jarett Giles (73) tied for eighth for the Cardinals.
Cole Jaworski of Community Colleges of Spokane, a sophomore from Coeur d’Alene High, shot 78 and is tied for 21st.
The 36-hole event concludes today.
