I grew up in the small town of Orwigsburg, Pa., where I resided all of my life before moving to Sandpoint. I attended Blue Mountain High School, where I participated in cross country and track and field, a sport that I ended up falling in love with. I went on to attend and run for DeSales University (with other brief stints at Susquehanna University and Elizabethtown College) and graduated with a bachelor’s degree in sport communication with a minor in sport management. I remember just how great it made me feel when I was mentioned in my hometown newspaper. I want to be able to give that feeling to every athlete in Bonner County, no matter how big or small their accomplishments are. As an athlete myself, I know how many hours of work are put in on a daily basis, and that hard work deserves to be recognized. It is my goal to cover as much of the Bulldogs, Spartans and Wampus Cats as I can. I want to work with every athlete, parent, coach, administrator and the community to ensure the best stories are published. | November 2, 2024 5:45 PM

EAGLE — To finish off what was arguably the best year of all-time for a Spartan cross country runner, Priest River High senior Brayden Lamanna had the fastest time among all area runners, finishing fourth out of 98 competitors at the 3A state meet held Saturday at Eagle Island State Park.

Lamanna, who placed 14th at the state meet last year, finished the 5,000-meter course in an impressive 16 minutes and 25 seconds. On the season, he finished among the top five at six different invitationals and now holds the school record by a large margin at 15 minutes and 42 seconds, which was set Oct. 12 at Lewis-Clark State College's Inland Empire Invitational.

Sophomore Alannah McLaimtaig also punched her ticket to the state meet after finishing fifth at the 3A Central Idaho League District Championship held at Pinehurst Golf Course on Oct. 24. She finished 48th out of 72 runners and ran to a time of 23 minutes and 43 seconds, her second best time of the season.

In 5A, sophomore Jack Lovin, who won the 5A Inland Empire League District Championship on Oct. 24, finished 22nd out of 105 runners in 16 minutes and 51 seconds for Sandpoint, which placed 12th out of 13 scoring teams. Freshman Wyatt Lemon added a 41st place finish with a time of 17 minutes and six seconds; he was the race's fourth overall freshman. Freshman Kai Budensiek was 77th (17:52), sophomore Trace Evans 77th (18:00), freshman Hobbes Conley 83rd (18:11) to round out the Bulldogs' top five.

On the girls side, sophomore Elizabeth Storms led the Lady Bulldogs to a 11th place team finish out of 13 scoring teams, running to 57th out of 103 runners in a time of 21 minutes and 15 seconds. Junior Hannah Ricks was 64th (21:25), freshman Delaney Barron 68th (21:33), both running to new personal best times. Sophomore Abby Eldore (21:43) and freshman Katelyn Duke (21:44) finished back-to-back in 72nd and 73rd with new personal bests to round out the Lady Bulldogs' top five.

In 2A, Clark Fork High junior Westin Caven, competing at state for the second straight year, finished 28th out of 108 runners with a time of 18 minutes and 16 seconds, his second best time on the year.
