OTHELLO — A reported burglary led to a damaged patrol vehicle and a trespass citation, according to a statement from the Adams County Sheriff’s Office.

ACSO deputies responded to a report of a burglary in progress Saturday at about 6:45 a.m. in the 2100 block of West Cunningham Road, the ACSO wrote. The reporting party had awakened to find an unknown male subject inside the home, lying on the couch. The resident held the subject at gunpoint until law enforcement arrived, according to the statement.

However, a deputy responding to the call encountered challenging road conditions at the intersection of Taylor and Bench roads. The deputy’s vehicle hit the guardrail after wet roads made it difficult to stop in time, according to the ACSO statement.

No serious injuries were reported. ACSO wrote that the department wants to remind residents to drive safely, especially in wet weather. The Washington State Patrol will be investigating the collision to ensure transparency.

While the collision was being handled, Othello Police Department assisted with the burglary until other deputies arrived.

Investigators determined that the suspect, who was intoxicated, thought he was entering a friend’s home and even rang the doorbell before letting himself into the residence.

The suspect fully cooperated with both the resident and responding officers. At the request of the resident, the subject was issued a trespass notice and provided a courtesy ride home by law enforcement.
