Flathead Valley Community College’s art department is hosting a gallery talk and photography exhibit closing reception with instructor and photographer Jim Goudy Nov. 13.

Growing up in a small Ohio farm town, Goudy found his passion for photography at an early age, inspired by his mother’s old Brownie camera. By sixth grade, he had set up his first darkroom in the bathroom and later channeled his skills toward the school newspaper.

Photography remains Goudy’s primary pastime. He is drawn to the dynamic world of street photography with a mission to capture fleeting moments that often go unnoticed, believing life is full of overlooked beauty. He said street photography challenges him to blend technical skills with an understanding of composition and light in order to frame a story in an instant.

“When photographing people, I strive to capture their dignity and humanity, presenting them with respect and empathy.  In essence, photography is about presence and narrative. So, if you find yourself in the frame of a street photographer, consider it a compliment — it's a recognition of the unique story you carry,” Goudy said.

The public is invited to view the exhibit and join the gallery talk from 4:30 p.m. to 6 p.m. in the Arts and Technology Building lobby. There is no cost to attend.
