RATHDRUM — Saturday was a day for recognition and remembrance at Lakeland Senior High School.

About 100 people gathered for the annual Veterans Recognition Ceremony sponsored by American Legion Post 154, the Northwest Guardian Riders, and the city of Rathdrum.

“It’s an honor to be here,” said Hal Donahue, who served in the Navy during the Korean War. “I think it’s important to honor those who fought for this country and those who gave their lives.”

“The camaraderie in the military is so important,” said Harold Markiewicz, an Air Force veteran.

While veterans and their families gathered around tables to enjoy the ceremony and lunch, one table notably remained empty — a reminder of their brothers and sisters who became prisoners of war or went missing in action.

A single rose, for the blood POW/MIAs shed for their country. Scattered grains of salt, for the tears shed by family and friends. Each item on the table held meaning, and a reminder that POW/MIAs — and all who have lost their lives in the line of duty — will never be forgotten. 

"Freedom isn't free. It's paid for by blood and longtime hardship," said Pete Williams, a member of Northwest Guardian Riders.

Guest speaker Damon Darakjy, commander of Coeur d’Alene American Legion Post 14, highlighted the importance of mental health for veterans.

“To my male counterparts here, it’s OK to ask for help," Darakjy said.
