COEUR d’ALENE — Two teams coming off deep state runs last February. 

And a learning experience for both. 

Sophomore Macy Murphey scored a game-high 14 points for the Lake City Timberwolves in a 57-53 win over the Lakeland Hawks on Tuesday at Lake City High. 

Maggie Hiltenbrand scored 11 points for Lake City (2-0), last year’s state 5A runner-up, which led 51-33 after three quarters on the Hawks, who advanced the state 4A semifinals. 

“We had a pretty good advantage and kept the game around 10 points,” Lake City coach David Pratt said. “We had a nice third quarter offensively and defensively. We played hard and did some good things and finished really well at the hoop. The last six minutes, Lakeland did a good job of coming back and making it a game. It became a really good situational learning experience, so it was a good game.” 

Lake City hosts Mountain View of Meridian on Thursday. 

Landree Simon scored 10 points for Lakeland (0-1), which hosts Kellogg on Dec. 3.

POST FALLS — The host Trojans cut the deficit to 51-48 with 2:58 remaining before the Bulldogs pulled away in an Inland Empire League game at The Arena. 

“We just kept grinding and battled back into it,” said Post Falls coach Mike Divilbiss, whose team trailed 31-18 at halftime. “The girls just kept in it and battled back. They played with a lot of passion and our energy is important to what we do. We’ve got to keep controlling us and do what we do.” 

Junior Kailey Walton scored 10 points for Post Falls (1-1, 1-1 IEL), which hosts Owyhee of Meridian on Thursday. 

Taylor Mire scored 16 points for Sandpoint (2-0), which travels to Moscow on Dec. 3.

SPIRIT LAKE — Malia Miller and Payton Young scored 11 points each for the Tigers in a win over the Bengals at Timberlake High. 

Jozee MacArthur and Marissa Needs scored nine points each for Timberlake in its season opener. 

“Everybody scored and our balance was great to see,” Timberlake coach Matt Miller said. “I was happy with how we shared the ball and everyone contributed on the offensive end. I was really happy with our defense in the second half. A few of the mistakes we were making in the first half got tightened up and we played really well in the second half.” 

Timberlake hosts Moscow on Thursday. 

Emery McKarcher scored 13 points for Lewiston (1-2), which travels to Coeur d’Alene next Tuesday.

“It was a good first game for us,” Lakeside coach Chris Dohrman said. “We did pretty well for the most part. We missed a few lay-ins and 3-pointers, but we won, so we can’t complain too much.”
